We read the rhythm of a Sikh celebration and are always in the right place for the milni, the laavan and the doli. We photograph the sacred and the joyful with equal care, the Anand Karaj as faithfully as the bhangra. We are at ease with large, multi-day Sikh celebrations and intimate gurdwara ceremonies alike.

Basildon is a large Essex town with a diverse community, developed as a post-war new town in the borough of Basildon. Basildon station is on the London, Tilbury and Southend line with c2c services to Fenchurch Street. When there is time for couple portraits, Northlands Park, a park with a lake to the north of the town is a favourite, and Wat Tyler Country Park at Pitsea, on the site of a former explosives factory makes a memorable setting.

Sacred moments, captured with respect

At the heart of a Sikh wedding is the Anand Karaj, the blissful union performed before the Guru Granth Sahib. We know the order of the Anand Karaj by heart, from the kirtan to the ardaas and the four laavan. The kirtan and shabads that fill the gurdwara are as much a part of the story as the laavan themselves.

We capture the lively milni as the two families meet, with the garlands, the dhol and the embraces. The reception is the joyful finale, with speeches, the first dance, bhangra and giddha. The dhol and bhangra of the jaggo are pure joy, and we capture every bit of the energy.
