Marrying at a gurdwara and holding the reception in Brentwood?

Treat this as two shoots, because that is what it is. Whatever gurdwara your family attends, its room and its rules predate you, and no camera changes them. We work inside that: one position, long glass, no flash, no movement while the ceremony runs. Afterwards the problem inverts. A function room after dark starts as a blank sheet, and whatever light ends up in those frames got there because we carried it in.

Brentwood then sets a second puzzle nobody plans for. Between ceremony and reception there is always an hour that exists purely because a room needs turning round, and that hour tends to hold the best light anyone will see all day. Thorndon Country Park, with its ancient woodland and parkland, is the sane thing to spend it on. Work out beforehand who is going, who is driving, and what you are both wearing by the time you get there.

Sehra bandi, milni and the baraat's arrival

Mornings are the least composed part of the day. Sehra bandi is a domestic scene, relatives pressed to the walls, so we shoot wide, close in, and let the domestic background stay in shot instead of fighting it. Milni runs outdoors and fast, a line of embraces between men who in many cases have never met. Standing between the two families buys you the backs of heads, so we take the flank, count the pairs, and check nobody's uncle is missing.

Guru Granth Sahib sets the terms in that hall, which settles most of our questions before we ask them: where we may stand, how low, how still, how far back. Four laavan, four circuits, a single vantage point. What varies from round to round is focal length and which instant we choose, since the palla, the hands and the parents' faces are each doing something different. The closing prayer lifts the room to its feet and we are positioned for that already.

How do your photographs cope with a dimly lit darbar hall?+

By not fighting it. Nothing fires while the ceremony runs, so the answer is glass that opens wide, a sensor that tolerates being pushed, and exposure set for faces instead of for the room. A little grain beats a lit-up hall.

Will you stay to photograph the doli?+

Yes. Emotionally the doli is the end of it, and it never runs to schedule, so we keep the final hour open rather than booking against it. We photograph from beside the car, quietly, and ask nobody to repeat anything.

Can you work with our videographer at the gurdwara?+

Easily, and better still if we speak beforehand. Ten minutes agreeing who owns which flank keeps two crews out of each other's shots. If no film team is booked yet, we can tell you how to brief one.

Do you photograph the langar after the ceremony?+

We do. Langar is where the day unclenches, and the best unguarded pictures of your relatives come out of it. We eat when the sangat eats, then carry on working as families move around.
