In Southend-on-Sea we would begin as the sangat gathers before the Guru Granth Sahib and follow the kirtan, the sikhia, each of the four laavan and the closing ardas through to langar. Every frame is written to two cards, spare camera bodies come to every event, and the files are duplicated after the day. Nothing is bolted on afterwards. Two buildings, and they share nothing. The morning sits in an institution whose floor, fittings and lighting nobody consulted you about, and nothing there gets moved to accommodate a camera. A hired space takes the evening, and there the ceiling height, the uplighting and the top table are all still undecided. One set you read; the other you help build. The skills are not the same, and neither is the kit.
Coverage tends to leak away at the join. Guests drift out in twos and threes, the sky changes while staff turn the hall round, and the opening of the evening arrives before anyone has explained where the entrance will happen. We treat that interval as a scheduled block, not as dead travel, and we want the evening floor plan beforehand so that its first frames are not improvised guesswork.

Within the darbar hall a photographer occupies one spot and stays in it. This is not taste; it comes out of where the sangat is seated, out of the etiquette everyone present is already keeping, and out of the plain fact that wandering around while the laavan are read would be indefensible. Choose the spot before anything begins, then hold it. Long glass, nothing added to the light, and a willingness to let a whole verse go by without a frame.
Around that fixed hour there is movement everywhere. Milni happens outdoors or in a lobby and is all handshakes and mismatched heights. The palla is short, close work. Langar is low tables and long queues, and it wants documentary treatment rather than portraiture. Doli lands at the end, everyone tired by then and the daylight usually gone, so decide in advance whether a forecourt at dusk gets lit or gets left dark.
