This is not taste; it comes out of where the sangat is seated, out of the etiquette everyone present is already keeping, and out of the plain fact that wandering around while the laavan are read would be indefensible. Choose the spot before anything begins, then hold it. Long glass, nothing added to the light, and a willingness to let a whole verse go by without a frame.

Around that fixed hour there is movement everywhere. Milni happens outdoors or in a lobby and is all handshakes and mismatched heights. The palla is short, close work. Langar is low tables and long queues, and it wants documentary treatment rather than portraiture. Doli lands at the end, everyone tired by then and the daylight usually gone, so decide in advance whether a forecourt at dusk gets lit or gets left dark.

How do you work alongside dhol players?+

We keep off their shoulder and shoot from in front or from behind the crowd, since the drum is loud, mobile and surrounded. Quicker shutter speeds hold the sticks still. Indoors, we watch for a ceiling throwing colour onto everybody.

What happens if the ceremony at the gurdwara runs longer than expected?+

We stay. Drift is normal, so the plan carries slack from the start instead of pretending a schedule binds anybody. Should the overrun eat your portrait hour, you will hear what is still achievable rather than being hurried through a list.
