Inside the darbar hall, and at its doors
Outside, the milni pairs relatives off one by one, and what is worth having sits a pace behind the embrace rather than inside it. A baraat arriving brings sound and crowding to a doorway never designed for either. The darbar hall then inverts the job: we work the perimeter on long lenses, bring no lighting in, and stop crossing the floor entirely. Whatever cannot be reached from the edge of that room simply does not get taken.
Kirtan rewards patience more than reflexes. The four laavan are the anand karaj proper, palla in hand, each round slow enough to be read from where we stand. Langar afterwards relaxes everyone and is the least guarded part of any Sikh day. The doli that closes things is brief and difficult, so we hold well back through it. One presence in that hall constrains every angle available, and no composition may crowd the Guru Granth Sahib.
