This is two different jobs and they want opposite things from us. Inside the hall we ask nothing of anyone and change nothing: a fixed spot, long glass, available light only, and stillness. At the reception the work inverts and we begin directing people, since an unlit function room holds nothing at all until somebody carries light into it. Warn your family that the switch is coming, so a photographer who suddenly has opinions surprises nobody.
Between those two halves lies the gap where days come apart. Someone has to own it: who leaves first, who is still sitting in a car, and when the room will genuinely be ready. The jago is the calendar's hardest thing to photograph and among the most worth having. It runs at night, it moves, and its light comes from whatever people are carrying, so expect grain, a slow shutter and a lot of frames that go nowhere. We accept that trade. Langar poses a different problem altogether: rows of people at floor level being served by volunteers, and what makes the picture is the hands and the queue rather than anybody's face.
Floor seating drops the whole room a metre below where a standing photographer's instincts sit. Upright, you shoot across the tops of heads; kneeling, you are in the sangat's way. We settle low at one side and stay put. The four laavan are photographed from a vantage point that never shifts, so the variable is which instant we take rather than where we take it from. Hall rules touching the Guru Granth Sahib get asked about first and are never tested.
