Sikh wedding photography in Grays and Thurrock

A gurdwara hands you its light and you cannot send it back. It may have strip fittings overhead, carpet throwing colour up under chins and glazing on a single wall. None of that changes for one morning, so we would rather know all of it in advance than discover it during ardas. We ask which hall you are booked into and what hangs over the sangat, then set white balance outward from the carpet.

Then comes the second job, a different trade altogether. An evening room in a country house outside Grays is one you can light; sockets, corners and ceiling height decide what is possible there, so ask about all three before signing. That seam is easy to forget. Somewhere between the last prayer and the first course we change gear, and when nobody has said in advance where that happens, we find out late.

The whole day, choora to doli

Sri Guru Granth Sahib's dais settles our working height before we get there. That puts a camera on the floor or barely off it, and removes the raised angle that would otherwise untangle a crowded room. We shoot low, on long glass, from the side. A wide establishing frame therefore comes off the back wall, which means getting in early enough to find that wall and see who will be sitting against it.

The four laavan are the heart of the gallery, and they are also four near-identical walks. We treat the set as one sequence carrying four separate jobs: the whole hall, then the palla itself, then the musicians and the faces turned toward them, then the parents. Langar is the hour where a day stops performing for anybody, and it can hold the warmest frames of the day. Once the doli is being loaded the light outdoors has moved on entirely, so that doorway gets scouted early instead of met cold.
