…Kaushik's work is fantastic and he took so much stress out of our special day. He and his team are highly professional, fun and friendly and work with you to capture the shots that you want. He captured some amazing moments of both us and our guests, some natural, some posed but all truly wonderful. We were blown away by our albums and videos and have no hesitation in recommending him to our family and friends.

Where it happens

Mapping a Hindu wedding across Essex, west to east

Essex is a long county. The west side, around Loughton, Chigwell and Epping, sits in the Epping Forest District just beyond the London boundary and is the part nearest our studio, at about 20 to 23 miles. Harlow lies on the River Stort at the Hertfordshire border, about 25 miles away, with the M11 to its east. Chelmsford, the county town, is about 39 miles out, and Colchester and a city since 2022, about 57.

A Hindu wedding rarely stays in one of those places. The ganesh sthapana and mandvo may be at one family's home, the pithi at the other's, a garba night in a hired hall, and the wedding itself somewhere else again. Before anything is booked, we ask for a simple list of every event with its address and start time, so the Essex map of your wedding is clear from day one.

Where the homes and the hall are far apart, say Grays in the south and Harlow in the west, it is worth deciding early which rituals need Kaushik for the whole time and which need only the key moments. That keeps the coverage honest about the drive between them.

Gujarati rituals

Gujarati wedding rituals and what each one needs from the camera

If your wedding follows Gujarati customs, the mandvo mahurat marks the start, with a small puja and the planting of the mandap pole, often in a back garden or a front room. The pithi follows, when relatives rub turmeric paste onto each of the couple in their own home. It is close, messy and full of laughter, so Kaushik works with a short lens and keeps the camera away from the paste.

On the wedding day, the jaan arrives at the venue in procession, and the welcome at the entrance, the ponkhvu, follows straight away. These moments happen fast and in a crowd, so we agree where the arrival will stop before the music starts.

Inside, the madhuparka, the hasta milap and the kanyadaan come first; during the pheras the couple circles the sacred fire, and in many Gujarati weddings the saptapadi, the seven steps, follows as its own rite before the sindoor and the mangalsutra. The day closes with the vidaai, which is often the quietest and most emotional part of the whole wedding.

Under the mandap

Fire, smoke and space around the mandap at an Essex hall

The mandap is usually set on a stage at one end of a hall or hotel suite, with the agni at its centre, and smoke from the havan can drift across the stage. Kaushik follows the photography rules of the venue and of your priest, and checks with the decorator where the guest seating ends so there is a clear line to the couple from the side.

The priest leads everything, and the muhurat sets the clock. We ask for the priest's running order a week or two before, so we know when the kanyadaan and the pheras will fall and where the families will stand. That way nobody has to be moved for the camera at a sacred moment.

If your venue has rules about open flames, they will shape the havan, so ask the venue manager early. A clear answer helps the decorator, the priest and the photographs.

The legal side

Civil ceremonies and the registration service in Essex

You can hold a short civil ceremony in Essex as well as the religious one, sometimes weeks apart. Essex County Council runs the registration service, with its main office at County Hall on Market Road in Chelmsford, and it lists over 130 venues licensed for marriages and civil partnerships across the county.

Grays and the rest of Thurrock are different: Thurrock is a unitary authority, and Thurrock Council runs its own register office from the Civic Offices in Grays. Couples living there should check which office handles their notice and ceremony.

Kaushik can photograph the civil ceremony on its own day or fold it into the main wedding, and either way it appears as a separate line in your written quote. Ask the registrar or your mandir which arrangement makes the marriage legal for you, since that depends on where the religious ceremony is held.

Portraits between rituals

Couple portraits near Essex landmarks

Most Hindu wedding days leave a short window for portraits, often between the vidaai and the reception, or on a separate day. In Harlow, the town's collection of over 100 public sculptures, including works by Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, gives a backdrop for colourful wedding outfits right in the town centre.

In Chelmsford, the cathedral, a Grade I listed building begun around 1200, sits in the city centre, while at the far end of the county Colchester Castle stands on the foundations of the Roman Temple of Claudius. Southend Pier, which runs 1.33 miles into the Thames Estuary, is another option for a pre-wedding walk by the water.

If you want portraits in Epping Forest, note that the City of London Corporation requires a licence for commercial photography there, including portrait sessions. We can talk through that before the day.

Planning

Planning around Essex

01

Share the muhurat early

Send the priest's timings for the kanyadaan and pheras as soon as you have them. Every other part of the coverage plan in Essex is built around that time.

02

Count the homes

List each family home hosting a ritual, with its town. Loughton is about 20 miles from the studio and Basildon about 37, so the order of visits matters.

03

Ask about the havan

Check the venue's rules on open flames before the decorator builds the mandap. It changes where the fire sits and where Kaushik can stand.

04

Plan the civil ceremony

Decide whether the legal ceremony is on the same day. Essex County Council and Thurrock Council run separate registration offices.

05

Keep a portrait window

Even 20 minutes between the vidaai and the reception gives time for couple portraits near the venue.

Places for a Hindu wedding day in Essex

Essex towns and landmarks worth knowing when you decide where each ritual, the mandap and the couple portraits will happen.

  • River Stort and county boundary: Harlow lies on the south bank of the River Stort, which forms the county boundary with Hertfordshire, and the M11 passes to the east of the town. 1
  • Green Belt commuter town: Brentwood, about 20 miles north-east of central London just outside the M25, had a built-up area population of 55,340 in 2021 and is surrounded by Green Belt countryside and woodland. 2
  • Billericay Registration Office: Essex County Council's Billericay Registration Office is at Burghstead Lodge, 143 High Street, Billericay CM12 9AB, where notices of marriage and civil partnership are given by appointment. 3
  • Essex Register Office ceremonies: Essex County Council's own register office, in Chelmsford, holds only 'You Plus Two' ceremonies for the couple, two witnesses and the registrars, so larger civil weddings take place at the county's approved venues. 4
  • Essex Register Office, Chelmsford: Essex County Council's own register office ceremonies are held at the Essex Register Office in Chelmsford as small 'You Plus Two' ceremonies, for the couple and their two witnesses only, on Mondays and Thursdays. 5

Good to know

Hindu weddings in Essex: questions answered

Yes. Kaushik photographs Gujarati weddings from the mandvo mahurat and pithi at home to the jaan, the pheras and the vidaai. We plan each ritual by its address in Essex, and travel from Northwood is quoted in writing for each day before you book.

Wedding photography starts from £750. A Hindu wedding with a pithi, a garba night and the main day costs more than a single day, so we build a bespoke quote listing each event, the hours, any second photographer, the album and the travel.

Yes, as long as the gap allows for the drive. A morning pithi in Chigwell and an afternoon ceremony in Brentwood is a very different plan from one in Colchester, so send both addresses and we will build the timings with you.

Yes. Kaushik agrees his positions with the priest and the decorator beforehand, and works from the edges of the mandap rather than the stage itself. Nobody is asked to pause a ritual for a photograph.

That depends on where the religious ceremony is held, so ask the registrar. Essex County Council's registration service has its main office at County Hall in Chelmsford, and Thurrock Council runs the register office in Grays. Kaushik can photograph either.

Yes. Garba and sangeet nights are usually in a hired hall in the evening, with fast dancing in a circle. Kaushik works from the edge of the floor and moves round with the dancers, so the colour of the outfits and the movement of the dance both come through.

The nearest towns, Loughton and Chigwell, are about 20 to 21 miles from Northwood. Harlow is about 25, Basildon about 37, Chelmsford about 39, Southend about 48 and Colchester about 57. Travel for each is set out in your written quote.
