Hold a date early
Booking in the second trimester gives room to move. Aim for 28 to 34 weeks, then shift a few days either way if you need to.

A maternity photoshoot in Essex can happen in your living room, in a park near home or at the Northwood studio. Kaushik plans it around the week you are in and how you feel on the day.
The short answer
The usual window for an Essex maternity shoot is 28 to 34 weeks of pregnancy, when the bump shows clearly and moving about is still comfortable. Get in touch during the second trimester so the date is held early. Kaushik comes to your home, your garden or a nearby park anywhere from Loughton to Colchester, or you can visit the Northwood studio instead. The drive from Northwood to your part of Essex is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book.
Our usual session area is within about 20 miles of the studio. Further out in Essex, sessions are by arrangement, with travel quoted in writing before you book.
Me and my heavily pregnant Fiancee visited here as a birthday gift from a friend of hers and had a LOVELY experience, Kaushik made us feel VERY welcomed and comfortable and we also had a good laugh. He was also very clear and precise with his instruction with regards to posing so we could get the best picture. Overall a very nice experience and would recommend.
We had a baby and family photo shoot with Kaushik over the weekend. He was extremely professional and very good with our baby! He has all the tricks and toys to make our little one smile and laugh during the shoot (which kept us entertained too!) would highly recommend Kaushik for baby photo shoots! Many thanks for capturing such beautiful photos for us!
We recently did a family photoshoot with our 8 months old daughter, and it was such a lovely experience. Kaushik was brilliant with her, so patient and playful, and he managed to get so many genuine smiles from her, which made a huge difference. He made us feel really comfortable throughout the shoot and never rushed us.
Timing
The usual window is 28 to 34 weeks. Earlier than that, a bump can look small in photographs; later, standing for a while, kneeling on grass or walking across a park begins to feel like hard work. Booking during the second trimester leaves room to move the date if an appointment, a hot spell or plain tiredness gets in the way, so the session is never squeezed into the final fortnight.
If you are expecting twins, or your midwife has asked you to take things gently, aim for the earlier end of that range and keep the plan simple. Tell us the due date when you first get in touch and Kaushik will suggest a window that fits it. If your plans change, a home session is the easiest kind to rearrange, because nobody needs to drive to a park and hope the weather holds.

At home
Home is often the most comfortable setting in the third trimester. You can sit down between set-ups, change outfits in your own bedroom and stop for a drink whenever you like. Kaushik brings lighting and backdrops, so a spare room or a bright corner of the lounge can work as a simple studio for the session, and the nursery you have been preparing can appear in a few frames if you would like it to.
Every Essex home is a drive from Northwood Hills. Loughton is about 20 miles from the studio, Harlow about 25, Brentwood about 31, Chelmsford about 39, Southend-on-Sea about 48 and Colchester about 57. The session price is given by phone or WhatsApp on 07956 505383, and the travel from Northwood is set out in your written quote next to it, so you see both figures before anything is booked.
Outdoors
Harlow Town Park is a strong choice in the west of the county. It covers more than 160 acres, was designed by Dame Sylvia Crowe and is Grade II listed. At its heart is a water garden of three cascading spring-fed ponds around Jesse Watkins's Pisces sculpture, and at its southern end a rhododendron dell of rhododendrons, hydrangeas and azaleas, so two quite different backdrops sit within one walk.
Around Chelmsford, the city has 19 Green Flag parks, among them Central Park, Admirals Park and Tower Gardens, Oaklands Park and the Hylands Estate, whose grounds hold formal gardens such as the East Terrace Garden and the Pleasure Gardens. Near Brentwood, Weald Country Park covers about 500 acres of former estate landscaped in the manner of Capability Brown, and Thorndon Country Park has ancient woodland and old oak pollards.
On the estuary side, Priory Park in Southend has gardens, water features, wide lawns and mature trees, and Chalkwell Park has 67 acres of flower gardens and open space. Two places need planning ahead: the City of London Corporation requires a licence for photography in Epping Forest, and Colchester's council publishes photography charges for High Woods Country Park. A garden at home needs no permission at all.

Studio
The nearest Essex towns are around 20 miles from the studio and the farthest well over 50, so for some parents a single trip to Northwood Hills is simpler than arranging a visit. The studio is at 21 Joel Street, on the Joel Street parade two minutes from Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line. Plain backdrops and controlled lighting suit the classic maternity portrait, with nothing in the background to tidy first.
You can pair a maternity session with a newborn session, so that one plan covers both. The Essex newborn photography page explains the at-home newborn visit, and the national baby photography page covers the studio option. Each visit is priced separately, and the travel for each one is written into the quote.
On the day
A partner can be part of as much or as little of the session as you like, and older children often enjoy a few frames with a hand on the bump before they lose interest. With a toddler in the house we start with the family photographs while energy is high and leave the quieter portraits for the end. A grandparent can join too, which is easiest when the session is at home.
Fitted dresses and soft knits show the shape of the bump well, and a long flowing dress moves nicely outdoors on a breezy day. Bring two or three outfits in calm colours, plus a cardigan or coat for between set-ups in cooler months. Comfortable shoes for the walk matter in a park like Thorndon or Weald, where the paths run through woodland. See the national maternity photoshoot page for more ideas.

Planning
Booking in the second trimester gives room to move. Aim for 28 to 34 weeks, then shift a few days either way if you need to.
Epping Forest needs a City of London Corporation licence for photography, and Colchester publishes charges for High Woods Country Park. A home garden needs no permission.
Plan a park session with a home or studio option behind it, so a wet or very hot day does not cost you the week you wanted.
Booking maternity and newborn together means one conversation covers both visits, with the travel for each set out in writing.

Town by town
The table shows how far each Essex town is from the Northwood studio, which is the distance a home maternity visit involves.
Good to know
Kaushik travels across the whole county from the Northwood studio. Loughton and Chigwell are about 20 to 21 miles away, Chelmsford about 39 and Colchester about 57. Travel from Northwood is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book, so the full cost is clear before you decide.
An Essex maternity session is priced on request by phone or WhatsApp on 07956 505383, because the figure depends on whether you choose home, park or studio and what you would like to receive afterwards. The travel from Northwood appears as its own line in the written quote.
Possibly, but it needs planning. The City of London Corporation requires a licence for photography in Epping Forest, including portrait sessions, so allow time for that before fixing a date. Harlow Town Park, a Chelmsford park or your own garden are simpler alternatives.
Then the maternity session becomes a newborn session instead. Let us know as soon as you can and Kaushik will move the booking, keeping the same written quote for travel where the location stays the same.
Yes. Partners, older children and even the family dog can join. With small children we photograph the family set-ups first, then take the calmer portraits of you on your own once they have had their turn.
Home suits parents who want to stay comfortable and avoid a drive late in pregnancy. The Northwood studio suits those who want plain backdrops and controlled lighting. Both give the same care, and Kaushik will talk through the choice with you on the phone.
Fitted dresses, soft knits and simple colours work well, and a flowing dress adds movement outdoors. Bring two or three options, comfortable shoes for park paths and something warm for between set-ups in cooler months.
Every session is photographed by Kaushik Bathia himself, FBIPP and FMPA, holder of five European Kodak Gold Awards, who opened the Northwood studio in 2001.
