The short answer

When should I book a maternity photoshoot in Oxfordshire?

Get in touch at around 20 to 24 weeks and aim to be photographed between 28 and 34 weeks, when the bump shows clearly but a short walk on a meadow is still comfortable. In Oxfordshire that could mean your living room in Bicester, the canal side of Spiceball Country Park in Banbury, or the studio in Northwood, about 38 miles from Oxford. Travel from Northwood is set out in your written quote before you confirm anything.

Our usual session area is within about 20 miles of the studio. Further out in Oxfordshire, sessions are by arrangement, with travel quoted in writing before you book.

We had a baby and family photo shoot with Kaushik over the weekend. He was extremely professional and very good with our baby! He has all the tricks and toys to make our little one smile and laugh during the shoot (which kept us entertained too!) would highly recommend Kaushik for baby photo shoots! Many thanks for capturing such beautiful photos for us!

We’re so glad we chose Kaushik as our photographer for maternity shoot —he was absolutely fantastic. On the day, he made us feel completely at ease, and the photos turned out superb. He was incredibly accommodating with all our requests and his attentiveness and personable nature were exactly what we hoped for in a photographer. Thank you, Kaushik!

Timing

Choosing your week when Oxfordshire is 38 to 51 miles away

Most bumps photograph well from about 28 weeks, and by 34 weeks the shape is at its fullest while moving around still takes little effort. Kaushik drives from Northwood to reach you: Oxford and Bicester sit about 38 miles from the studio and Banbury about 51. It helps to choose a date with a spare day either side, so that if the forecast turns or you feel tired, there is somewhere to move the session to.

Twins, a planned early delivery or a demanding job can bring the window forward to around 26 weeks. Tell us your due date when you enquire and we will suggest a week that leaves room for a second attempt. Travel from Northwood to your Oxfordshire address is quoted up front and set out in writing, so you know the full picture before anything is booked.

Outdoors

Meadows and riverbanks for an Oxfordshire bump shoot

Port Meadow, north-west of Oxford city centre, is around 300 acres of ancient common grazing land running beside the Thames. Horses and cattle still graze it, so an outdoor maternity session there is planned around where the animals are and kept to level grass close to the water. Wide open ground and a big sky suit a flowing dress and a simple silhouette in the last hour before sunset.

Christ Church Meadow is open during daylight hours every day of the year apart from Christmas Day, with riverside paths and a view back to Oxford's skyline. That skyline gives a bump portrait an unmistakable sense of place. At 33 weeks short distances matter, so we plan two or three spots close together rather than one long walk across the grass.

In the north of the county, Spiceball Country Park in Banbury covers 26 acres split by the River Cherwell, with the Oxford Canal along its western edge. Bicester's Bure Park is a 21 acre Local Nature Reserve of grassland, scrub, woodland and hedges with the River Bure running through it, which gives softer, greener backdrops for a quieter session.

At home

A maternity session in your own Oxfordshire home

Plenty of parents would rather stay indoors, and a home session suits that well. Kaushik brings what is needed to light the room, looks for the window with the softest light, and works in a cleared corner of a bedroom or sitting room. A nursery that is half ready, a scan picture or a pair of tiny shoes can sit in the frame and say more than any studio prop.

Bicester has been a designated garden town since 2014, and if you have just moved into one of its newer homes, a freshly painted room with clean light makes a calm backdrop. In an older Oxford terrace or a stone house in a village near Banbury, the character of the room does the work instead. Either way, the session is about an hour and goes at your pace, with breaks to sit down.

Studio

When the Northwood studio makes more sense than a meadow

The studio at 21 Joel Street in Northwood Hills is about 38 miles from Oxford and Bicester and about 51 from Banbury. It is the right choice for a winter due date, for a fitted gown that would drag in wet grass, and for anyone who wants a plain backdrop and controlled light. It sits on the Joel Street parade, two minutes from Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line.

Partners and older children are welcome wherever the session happens. You can also pair the bump session with a newborn shoot a few weeks later: our newborn photography in Oxfordshire page explains how that works at home, and the maternity photoshoot page covers outfits and poses. Every other service in the county is on the Oxfordshire photographer page.

Planning

Planning around Oxfordshire

01

Pick a 28 to 34 week date

Aim for that window and leave a spare day either side, since a drive of 38 to 51 miles from Northwood is easier to move than to rush on a tired afternoon.

02

Mind the grazing on Port Meadow

Horses and cattle still graze the meadow beside the Thames, so outdoor frames are planned around the animals and kept to level grass with short walks between them.

03

Bring two outfits, not five

A fitted dress and something soft from your own wardrobe is plenty for an Oxfordshire bump session, and leaves time to sit down between changes.

04

Think about January light

Short winter afternoons make outdoor sessions in Banbury or Oxford tight, so a home session or the Northwood studio is the calmer choice from November to February.

Good to know

Maternity photoshoots in Oxfordshire: questions answered

Yes. Banbury is about 51 miles from the Northwood studio, the farthest of the three Oxfordshire towns we list, and Kaushik drives there for sessions at home or in a park such as Spiceball Country Park. Travel from Northwood is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book, so the total is clear from the start.

Maternity session prices are given on request by phone or WhatsApp on 07956 505383, because the cost depends on where the session happens and what you would like at the end. For an Oxfordshire address, the written quote also sets out the travel from Northwood before you book.

Yes. Partners, older children and the family dog are all welcome, whether the session is in your Oxford sitting room or out on Port Meadow. Toddlers do better early on, so we take the family frames first and the quieter bump portraits afterwards, once small people have wandered off to play.

Christ Church Meadow is owned by Christ Church and open during daylight hours all year except Christmas Day, with riverside paths and views across to Oxford's skyline. For anything beyond a small, informal session, check the college's current guidance before the day, as the owner of private land sets its own rules.

Flat shoes for walking between spots, a fitted dress or a soft knit that shows the shape of the bump, and a warm layer for between frames. Port Meadow and Spiceball Country Park both lie beside rivers, and evenings by the water can turn cool, so bring a coat even in late spring.

Tell us as early as you can. An Oxfordshire home session can go ahead in any weather, and an outdoor one can move to a dry date that still falls before 34 weeks, or switch to the Northwood studio, which is about 38 miles from Oxford and Bicester.

Kaushik Bathia, FBIPP and FMPA, photographs every session personally and has done so from the Northwood studio since 2001, with five European Kodak Gold Awards along the way.
