The short answer

Where can I have a maternity photoshoot in North West London?

A maternity session can happen at the Northwood Hills studio, which is warm and private, or at home. If you would like to be outdoors, choose somewhere with level paths and a bench, such as the walled garden at Eastcote House Gardens or Hatch End Riverside Park with its accessible circular path. Plan for 28 to 34 weeks. Prices are given on request, and travel to a home or garden session is set out in your written quote.

We’re so glad we chose Kaushik as our photographer for maternity shoot —he was absolutely fantastic. On the day, he made us feel completely at ease, and the photos turned out superb. He was incredibly accommodating with all our requests and his attentiveness and personable nature were exactly what we hoped for in a photographer. Thank you, Kaushik!

Me and my heavily pregnant Fiancee visited here as a birthday gift from a friend of hers and had a LOVELY experience, Kaushik made us feel VERY welcomed and comfortable and we also had a good laugh. He was also very clear and precise with his instruction with regards to posing so we could get the best picture. Overall a very nice experience and would recommend.

We had a great experience with our family photoshoot. The photographer made everyone feel relaxed and comfortable, which really shows in the final photos. The images are natural, well-captured, and beautifully edited. We’re all really happy with the results and would highly recommend.

When

28 to 34 weeks, and what that means for a spring or autumn due date

The window is about 28 to 34 weeks: the bump is clearly rounded and you are still comfortable enough to relax in front of the camera. Twin pregnancies usually photograph nearer 28 weeks. If you want Eastcote House Gardens or another Hillingdon space, apply for the council's permission through its Film Office as soon as you have a date, so the session still falls inside the window.

Your due date decides the season. A due date in March or April puts the session in midwinter, when the studio or your living room is the natural choice. A due date in November or December puts it in early autumn, when the orchard at Eastcote House Gardens and the old trees around Canons Park are still in leaf. Book a few weeks ahead so the date lands inside the window.

Level ground

Gardens with benches: Eastcote, Canons Park and Pinner Village Gardens

Eastcote House Gardens on High Road, Eastcote, is mostly grassland with fine old ornamental trees, a walled garden of shrubs, herbaceous borders and herb beds, and an old orchard of mulberry, fig, apple, walnut and medlar. The 17th-century timber-framed stable block and the Grade II listed dovecote, square and red-brick under a pyramidal tiled roof, sit a few steps from the lawn. It is a Hillingdon space, so the council's photography permission applies.

The King George V Memorial Garden in Canons Park is a walled garden redesigned in the 1930s, with a central square pool, a raised terrace, formal flower beds and a pavilion. A flowing dress beside the pool and terrace makes a formal portrait without any climbing, and the park's café gives you somewhere to rest between set-ups.

Pinner Village Gardens, laid out in the 1930s as pleasure gardens, has specimen trees and a rose garden, and Hatch End Riverside Park has an accessible circular path with benches overlooking the River Pinn. Both are in Harrow, about 1.5 to 1.7 miles from the studio, so either is a short drive from home or from Joel Street.

Views without the climb

Old Redding and Bentley Priory for later in pregnancy

A view over London is tempting, but Harrow Hill rises to 408 feet and the way up to St Mary's churchyard is a climb. Later in pregnancy, Old Redding on the Harrow Weald ridge is kinder: the Viewpoint there has car parking and looks across north London on a clear day, so you can step out of the car and into the picture.

Bentley Priory Nature Reserve in Stanmore covers 66 hectares, and its hard-surfaced Deer Path and Weald Path are suitable for pushchairs and outdoor wheelchairs, which also makes them steady going at 33 weeks. The open space north of the Uxbridge Road has meadows grazed by cattle in summer, beside a private deer park with about 24 fallow deer.

Just over the Hertfordshire boundary, north-east of Northwood, Oxhey Woods has a one-kilometre firm-surfaced circular walk, with its car park at Prestwick Road and Oxhey Drive. Woodland shade gives soft, even light, and the firm path means you are never picking your way over roots.

Indoors

At home or at Joel Street: the warm option

Most maternity sessions happen at the studio, which is warm and private, with full control over the light and a plain backdrop that suits both fitted and flowing outfits. From Northwood, Northwood Hills or Moor Park it is a walk, and from Ruislip Manor, North Harrow or Rayners Lane a short drive. Partners and older children are welcome in the frame.

A home session suits the final weeks, when travelling feels like effort. Kaushik works beside your largest window and can include the nursery if it is ready, or a sibling's hand on the bump. The hour is unhurried either way, with time to sit down between set-ups and gentle direction so you never wonder what to do with your hands. Travel from Northwood to your home is set out in your written quote.

What to bring

Outfits, colours and the bump-to-baby plan

Bring something fitted that shows the bump and something flowing that moves. Solid colours photograph cleanly; outdoors, creams and soft blues stand out against the greens of the gardens, and indoors deeper tones look rich against a plain backdrop. A traditional outfit, such as a sari or a salwar kameez, works just as well if it means something to you.

A maternity session can be combined with a newborn session in the first couple of weeks after the birth, and the North West London newborn page explains how that works at home or at the studio. The national maternity photoshoot page has more on outfits and timing, and if you live close to Harrow, see the Harrow maternity page.

Planning

Planning around North West London

Eastcote needs permission

Eastcote House Gardens is a Hillingdon space, and the council asks for permission through its Film Office before professional photos there, so apply in good time.

02

Bentley Priory paths

The Deer Path and Weald Path are hard-surfaced and pushchair-friendly, which makes them steady underfoot later in pregnancy.

Twin pregnancies usually photograph nearer 28 weeks; tell us early so the date sits inside the window.

04

A walk from Northwood

Northwood, Northwood Hills and Moor Park are within walking distance of the studio, which is two minutes from Northwood Hills station.

Good to know

Maternity photoshoots in North West London: questions answered

Yes, with permission. Hillingdon Council requires permission for professional photos in its parks and green spaces, Eastcote House Gardens included, and you apply through its Film Office. The walled garden, the old orchard and the listed dovecote sit close together, which keeps walking to a minimum. Eastcote is about 1.6 miles from the studio.

It can be, earlier in the 28 to 34 week window. St Mary's churchyard at the top of Harrow Hill looks towards central London, Canary Wharf and Wembley Stadium, but the hill rises to 408 feet. Later on, the Old Redding viewpoint on the Harrow Weald ridge gives a similar outlook with parking beside it.

Yes. Partners and older children are welcome and often bring the warmest pictures of the set. At a home session in Stanmore, Kenton or Pinner, the children can join for part of the hour and then go back to their day.

Yes. Hayes is about 6.5 miles from the studio, and Kaushik comes to your home or to a park near you, such as Barra Hall Park with its ornamental lawns, rose beds and bandstand. Barra Hall Park is a Hillingdon park, so the council's photography permission applies. Travel out to Hayes is quoted in writing before you book.

A fitted outfit and a flowing one, layers you can take off for a few minutes at a time, and comfortable shoes for the walk between spots. In the autumn gardens of Canons Park or Eastcote, warm solid colours sit well against the leaves. Bring a coat to wear between photographs.

Session prices are given on request by phone or WhatsApp on 07956 505383, and depend on the session and the prints or albums you choose. For a session at your home or in a park, travel from Northwood is set out in writing before you book.

A few weeks before you reach 28 weeks, with your due date, so we can hold a date inside the window. If you want an outdoor session in a Hillingdon garden such as Eastcote House Gardens, add time for the council's permission as well.

Every session is photographed by Kaushik Bathia himself, FBIPP and FMPA, holder of five European Kodak Gold Awards, who opened the Northwood studio in 2001.
