Ruislip Lido offers a family two things that seldom occur together: a sandy beach and a miniature railway. The railway is the more useful of the pair. Small children spend their willingness to be photographed long before the adults run out of ideas, and a ride buys back a genuine stretch of interest during which nobody has to be persuaded to look anywhere in particular. So the running order is fixed by that rather than by us: the frame that includes everybody happens right away, before the youngest member of the party stops finding this fun, and the loose frames around the train and the shoreline come afterwards. Dry sand is the practical catch. A pram wheel sinks into it, a stick sinks into it, and anyone who needs a firm surface underfoot stays on the made path while the rest of the family walks back to them whenever a picture has to include everyone. Grandparents are photographed seated, on a bench picked out before we begin rather than hunted for once somebody is tired. The beach also carries no shade whatsoever, which rules out the hours around noon in summer far more firmly than the woods ever would. Wind is the other thing the reservoir supplies generously, and it undoes hair faster than anyone expects. On a raw day, or with a baby in the group who needs feeding somewhere warm, we do the whole thing in Northwood and lose none of it.
