The short answer

Where can we do a pre-wedding shoot in North West London?

Harrow Hill, the Old Redding viewpoint, the canal at Cowley Lock and the Spanish Steps at Wembley Park all work, as do the Art Deco streets around Rayners Lane station. Hillingdon green spaces such as Ruislip Lido need permission through the council's Film Office. A shoot usually lasts one to two hours with one or two outfits. Prices are given on request, and travel to your chosen spot is set out in your written quote.

We were a little nervous as it was our first photo shoot but Kaushik was very friendly and quickly had our nerves calmed with his charming personality. A great all round experience and we have some fab professional photos that we are very happy with. Highly recommended, 5 Stars :)

Really pleased with my photos. Kaushik is very professional and took lots of picture for us to choose from. Our shoot was comfortable and not too long. I would highly recommend him.

The hill

Harrow on the Hill: churchyard views and old school streets

Harrow on the Hill is a historic village on a 124-metre hill about half a mile south of the modern town, built around St Mary's Church, which was begun in 1087 and has a spire that makes it the highest building in Middlesex. From the churchyard the view runs towards central London, Canary Wharf, the BT Tower and Wembley Stadium, and in evening light the skyline sits behind you.

The churchyard also holds the Peachey Tomb, where Lord Byron sat as a Harrow pupil between 1801 and 1805, and a plaque on Grove Hill marks where Charles I stopped in 1646 for a last look at London. If you like a story behind your pictures, it is here. It is a place of worship and burial, so the session stays quiet and respectful.

On Church Hill stands the Old Schools, a Grade I building whose west wing dates from 1615, with stepped red-brick gables on the east wing added in 1820. Harrow on the Hill is about 3.8 miles from the studio, a short drive, or Kaushik meets you there.

Water

Canal towpaths at Cowley Lock, Uxbridge and Alperton

The Grand Union Canal opened past Uxbridge in 1794 and still forms part of the borough boundary just west of the town. The Cowley Lock conservation area takes in Cowley Lake, wet woodland, Little Britain, the Cowley bridges and Packet Boat Lane, and Little Britain Lake, between the River Colne and the Frays River, is named for its resemblance to the shape of the British Isles.

Further east, the Paddington Arm leaves the main line at Bull's Bridge in Hayes and runs 13½ miles to Paddington without a lock, passing Alperton, whose towpath has appeared in scenes of EastEnders. A towpath gives a long, quiet line for walking shots, with lock gates, bridges and reflections along the way. Keep to one side for cyclists.

City energy

Wembley Park's Spanish Steps and the art trail

For an urban look, Wembley Park has the Spanish Steps, a public staircase of 58 steps on Wembley Park Boulevard between Wembley Stadium and OVO Arena Wembley. The free Wembley Park Art Trail adds 26 artworks, including Frank Styles's anamorphic portrait of Freddie Mercury across those same steps and a Live Aid tile mural on Olympic Way. The stadium's 134-metre lattice arch gives the area a skyline nobody mistakes.

Olympic Way was built for the 1948 London Olympics and leads from the station towards the stadium, so check stadium and arena event days before choosing a date. Wembley Park is about six miles from the studio; Kaushik meets you there, and travel from Northwood is set out in your written quote.

Metro-land

Art Deco frontages and Charles Holden stations

The Metropolitan Railway built much of this corner of London, and the architecture still shows it. The Rayners Lane Conservation Area, designated in 2002, is classic Metroland with 1930s Modernist and Art Deco buildings, including the Grade II* former Grosvenor cinema with its stylised elephant's trunk canopy, now the Zoroastrian Centre. Eastcote station's cube-shaped brick and glass ticket hall, rebuilt to a Charles Holden design, is Grade II listed.

These are public streets and working stations, so the pictures happen on the pavement, outside the doors and quickly. Pair them with a park for a second look: Pinner Village Gardens is reached from Rayners Lane itself, and Eastcote House Gardens is on High Road, Eastcote, a short way from the station.

Woods and wild

Ruislip Woods, Fryent Country Park and Gladstone Park

For something greener, Ruislip Woods, London's first national nature reserve, has oak and hornbeam coppice and the Lido on Reservoir Road. Hillingdon Council requires permission through its Film Office for engagement shoots in its green spaces, and it names Ruislip Lido among them. In Brent, Fryent Country Park rises to 86 metres at Barn Hill, with a car park for about 50 cars on the western side of Fryent Way.

Gladstone Park, a Green Flag park on a hill above Neasden with views over London, has meadows, tree-lined avenues, a walled garden and a duck pond. Horsenden Hill, between Perivale, Sudbury and Greenford, rises to 85 metres and looks towards Harrow on the Hill and Wembley Stadium. Either suits a relaxed walk-and-talk session with long views in the background.

Before the wedding

Timing an engagement or Asian pre-wedding shoot

An engagement shoot is a relaxed hour or two that gets you used to the camera before the wedding, and the pictures are ready months ahead for save-the-dates, a wedding website or a print for guests to sign. For Asian weddings a pre-wedding shoot can be a bigger production with outfit changes, and moving between the canal and the Wembley Park steps, or between Harrow Hill and the studio, gives each outfit its own setting.

A pre-wedding shoot can be added to your North West London wedding photography, along with a second photographer and a hand-finished album. Anniversaries and portraits of the two of you without a wedding in sight are just as welcome; see the national couples photoshoot page, the Harrow couples page and our pre-wedding locations guide.
