Serving Northwood
Portrait sittings are photographed indoors in the town itself, out along Northwood's tree lined roads, or under the old canopy of the nature reserve to the south, and Moor Park, Northwood Hills and Rickmansworth are booked on exactly this footing.
Individual sitters wanting a current picture, couples, and families marking a birthday make up most of what comes in. One craft decision gets made properly here rather than gambled on in advance: we begin outdoors, look at frames together on a screen, and shift the sitting indoors partway through if the light has turned, which is only realistic when the room is minutes from wherever we started.

What we offer
Portrait sittings indoors in Northwood or outdoors under the old woodland canopy just south of the town.
Frames put on a screen as we photograph, so the picture is agreed while you sit in the chair.
Retouched files in colour and monochrome, at print size and cropped for profiles, in a private gallery.
Why choose us
A sitting begins with a few minutes deciding what the picture is actually for, then roughly half an hour of photography with pauses in it. We put frames on a screen while we work, so the choice is made together rather than handed to you afterwards.
What you receive is a retouched selection, colour and monochrome, at a size that suits framing as well as a phone. The part we do differently is the standing invitation to call in later and handle papers and print sizes before ordering anything.

Good to know
Yes, and sparingly. Whether your session is in Northwood or at Northwood, we remove only fleeting distractions like a loose hair or blemish, keeping your natural skin, lines and character intact. The result is a flattering, honest portrait that looks like you, not a heavily retouched picture.
The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6. For a Northwood portrait that means no journey to plan and no meeting point to settle on. A sitting can run indoors there, outdoors nearby, or both inside one booking if the sky changes. It also means you can call in afterwards and look at papers and print sizes in your hand before deciding what to have made.
Northwood is where the room is, so more portraits are made here than anywhere else we work. Sittings run indoors against a plain background, outdoors under the street trees, or in the ancient woodland to the south. Because nobody has to travel, a booking can be split across two of those without losing half the time to the road.
Yes. Tell us the headcount and the youngest and oldest ages when you book, because both decide the location more than the number does. Bigger groups go better indoors, where everyone stands on level ground and is lit alike. Outdoors we pick somewhere with a clear approach and room to step well back, and photograph the whole group early.
Once we finish in Northwood or the studio, you receive a gallery of carefully edited images to choose from. You can then order prints, frames, canvases and hand-finished albums, or simply keep the digital portraits. Editing stays natural and light, keeping you looking like yourself at your best.

An affluent, leafy suburb on the London and Hertfordshire border known for its private schools and green setting. Served by Northwood station on the London Underground Metropolitan line in zone 6. When a session suits an outdoor setting, Ruislip Woods National Nature Reserve is a favourite near Northwood, close to Mount Vernon Hospital.

Ruislip Woods is the obvious setting for a Northwood sitting and also the one that needs the most thought, because ancient woodland behaves nothing like a park. Old trees hold a high, closed canopy, and from about May the floor beneath it sits several stops darker than the street outside. Worse than the darkness is the colour. Light filtered through a full leaf canopy arrives green, and green light on skin reads as illness rather than health. There are two ways round that. Work the edges and the rides, where the canopy breaks and daylight comes in from the side, or book between leaf fall and leaf burst, when bare branches let the sky down onto the floor and the reserve photographs open and silver. February is therefore an easier month here than July, which inverts what most people assume when they ring. Clothing follows the floor rather than fashion. The ground is leaf litter and the trunks are grey brown, so browns, olives and rust sink into the background and take the outline of the sitter with them. Mid blues, deep reds, charcoal and off white all separate cleanly. Busy pattern is worth avoiding for a related reason: dappled woodland already prints pattern onto a face, and two patterns fight each other. The town's own residential roads are the quieter alternative and often the better one. Mature street trees filter light without the heavy green cast of a closed canopy, and a sitting that stalls out there can carry on indoors in the town itself, with nobody driving anywhere to make that happen.
