Ask whoever runs the gurdwara where in their hall a photographer belongs, and the line that ends it, and ask months ahead, not while everyone is arriving.

An evening room undoes all of that. The two clubs here are golf clubs, and a function room of that type comes with a low ceiling, glass facing the course and very little else that is fixed. Its light we make ourselves, with only the ceiling arguing back about where any of it can go. Two addresses, then, and two different jobs; families stop performing in the hours that separate them.

Floor seating puts every eyeline roughly a metre beneath the height a standing photographer shoots from. Photograph it from standing height and the whole room flattens. So we go low, near the back, and since moving about during the laavan cannot be done, the frames get chosen as a set in advance: one position, four passes, variation coming from the lens and from the timing of the shutter instead of from where we stand.

Earlier, outside, the milni is handshakes and embraces in whatever light the car park offers, usually with the sun behind somebody's head. Langar afterwards is warm, crowded and worth more frames than most people expect. Then the day changes address, and the kit that suited a quiet morning hall is wrong for a loud room at night. We pack for both, and the swap happens during the gap, not halfway through a speech. Anything missed in that hall stays missed, so the morning is where our concentration goes.

Do you photograph interfaith weddings where one partner is not Sikh?+

Often. The practical difference is that half the room has never seen the running order before, and their faces show it. We photograph that reaction as well as the couple, and we tell the unfamiliar side beforehand what to expect and when.

Our families are huge. Can you photograph groups of fifty or more people?+

A group of fifty is really a depth of field problem. We want height, a stopped down lens and ground where the back row is not in shade, so that position gets found while the meal runs. Assembled properly, a row that size takes minutes.

Can you cover our multi-day Sikh wedding events in Northwood?+

Yes. Evening events are handheld, dark and fast, and they are a different craft from the ceremony. Book each day separately in your own mind, because coverage that runs across several nights in Northwood needs its own timings and its own rest.
