The commercial work here divides between two kinds of premises, and neither is a conventional office. Mount Vernon Hospital is a long established hospital and cancer centre, and the private schools the town is known for account for most of the rest. Institutional buildings share one lighting problem above all others. A corridor, a ward or a classroom usually has overhead fittings burning all day plus daylight arriving hard from a single side, and those two sources are different colours. Set the camera for one and the other goes wrong, so faces come out half warm and half blue green. No setting on the body repairs it. What repairs it is carrying enough light of our own to overrule whichever source is losing, or photographing a room at the hour when one of the two has effectively stopped. Access is the second constraint and it is not ours to set. In a hospital or a school a corridor cannot be blocked, a room is released for a stated window, and some areas are photographed by nobody. So the list is agreed first and the day is built backwards from the room bookings rather than from the sun. That reverses the usual order of a location day, and here it is the only honest way to plan one. Staff pictures follow the same reasoning. People cannot queue. We hold one corner with our own background and lighting for a few hours and photograph whoever is free, everything made at one distance and one height so the finished set hangs together.
