A sitting runs about ninety minutes and opens with a walk rather than a pose, because uneven footing takes your attention off the camera without anyone having to be told to relax. We photograph in short working stretches, turn the screen round as we go, and stop while it is still going well.
You receive an edited set in a private gallery, supplied at web resolution and at full print resolution, with your chosen frames retouched by hand. The one thing done differently: wardrobe is discussed beforehand against the actual colours of the common, not in the abstract.

What we offer
Portrait sittings at the wooded edge of Harrow Weald Common, or on a plain background at the Northwood studio.
Wardrobe agreed beforehand against the browns and greys of the common, so nobody disappears into the background.
Short working stretches, frames reviewed with you as we go, and an edited gallery you choose from afterwards.
Twenty-five years behind the lens
We are patient with children and older sitters alike, and shape the pace of the session around whoever is in front of us. Window light does much of the flattering on its own, wrapping softly around one side of the face, and the studio lighting comes out only when a crisper, more graphic look is wanted.
Group portraits are arranged with everyone lit and placed well, and we can add individual shots on the day. Short sittings are perfectly reasonable: one strong frame for a profile picture, or a longer visit covering several changes of clothes and a full wall portrait.

Good to know
Not long at all, as we keep turnaround fast. Once the shoot is finished, we edit your images with care and send you a gallery to pick your favourites from. Prints, frames, canvases or albums you go on to order then arrive shortly after that. Getting to Harrow Weald is straightforward for us: served by Harrow and Wealdstone station to the south on the Bakerloo line and London Overground, with buses along the A409 Uxbridge Road.
Yes, and the ground in Harrow Weald does more of that work than anything we could say. A sitting on the common opens as a walk on uneven, rooty paths, so your attention goes to your feet instead of to being looked at. We photograph while you are moving and talking, keep each working stretch short, and turn the screen round early so you stop imagining the worst.
Yes. We travel to Harrow Weald for portraits out of the Northwood studio, and cover Stanmore, Belmont and Pinner too. A sitting runs either at the wooded edge of Harrow Weald Common or indoors at The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6. Say which you would prefer when you book, because that choice changes what is worth wearing and which part of the day we pick.
For a sitting on the common at Harrow Weald, avoid tan, khaki and olive. The background there is bracken, leaf litter and bare trunks, and those colours take your outline with them. Deep blue, charcoal, burgundy and cream all separate cleanly. Bring a second option in a different weight, cover the arms rather than going sleeveless, and wear shoes you can stand about in on wet ground.
It varies with the type of session and what you would like afterwards, from digital images alone to prints, frames, canvases and albums. Tell us your plans for your Harrow Weald sitting, be it personal branding or a graduation portrait, and we will put together a clear, straightforward quote.

Harrow Weald runs north until the houses stop and the wooded green belt at Harrow Weald Common takes over, and that boundary, rather than the wood itself, is where a sitting is worth arranging. Common land is not landscaped. Nobody mows it, nobody thins the canopy, and the light reaching head height inside the trees arrives in hard bright patches with deep shade between them. A face lit that way carries a bright spot on one cheek and nothing on the temple, which is a problem of where somebody stands rather than something correction repairs. Put a sitter at the boundary, where the canopy gives out and the sky opens, and there is one broad soft source from the open side with the wood behind as a dark, quiet backdrop. Season decides how far into the trees we can usefully go. From late autumn, with the leaves gone, the canopy stops holding light out and the interior of the wood photographs evenly enough to work in properly. By high summer the same ground is closed over and the boundary is the only dependable place to stand. Clothing follows the colour of the ground rather than fashion. Bracken, leaf litter and bare trunks give a background that is almost entirely brown, rust and grey-green, so anyone in tan, khaki or olive sinks into it and loses their outline. Deep blue, charcoal, burgundy and off-white all keep their shape against that. Texture counts as much as colour here: knitwear and heavier weaves read as substance under soft light, where flat cotton flattens further and reads as an area of tone.
