The short answer

Where can we have an engagement shoot in Kent?

Kent has historic public places that make good engagement shoot settings. Esplanade Gardens in Rochester looks up at the castle and the Medway bridge, Canterbury's Westgate is the largest surviving city gate in England, and Tunbridge Wells has the Pantiles colonnade and Wellington Rocks on the common. Kaushik travels from Northwood for a couples photoshoot anywhere in Kent, and the travel is set out in your written quote before you book.

Our usual session area is within about 20 miles of the studio. Further out in Kent, sessions are by arrangement, with travel quoted in writing before you book.

My two sisters and I ‘ the golden girls’ had a great, hilarious photo session. Kaushik is very professional and took some amazing photos especially when we were laughing so much trying to get up from the floor. Can’t wait to see ‘air brushed’ version. Well at 75 you need a little help. Definitely recommend Kashuik. He enjoyed our craziness!

Why bother

What an engagement shoot does before a Kent wedding

Most couples feel awkward in front of a camera at first. An hour together with Kaushik before the wedding takes the edge off, so that on the day you already know how he works, how close he stands and when he is likely to ask you to walk, stop or look at each other. That familiarity shows in the wedding photographs.

It is also a practical rehearsal. We learn how you like to stand, which side you prefer, and whether one of you laughs with your eyes closed. If your wedding is somewhere in Kent, the engagement shoot can happen in the same town or nearby, which gives a feel for the light and the pace of the day. The images often end up on a save-the-date card or in the Kent wedding album guest book.

Couples booking a wedding with us can add an engagement or pre-wedding shoot as an optional extra. You can also book a couples photoshoot on its own, for an anniversary, a proposal, or simply because you have no good photographs of the two of you together.

Settings

River, castle and cathedral settings across Kent

Rochester is a natural first choice. Esplanade Gardens has a riverside walk and access to Rochester Pier, with views of the castle, Rochester Bridge and the River Medway. The Norman keep of Rochester Castle, built of Kentish ragstone around 1127, still stands 113 feet high, and the town has the extra character of its Dickens connections, with Rochester appearing in Great Expectations and The Pickwick Papers.

In Canterbury, the Westgate was built around 1379 to 1380 across the River Stour and is 60 feet tall. Dane John Gardens, inside the city walls, were laid out as a civic park between 1790 and 1803 around a mound that began as a Roman burial mound. Between the two you can move from stone gateway to tree-lined paths in a few minutes on foot.

Gravesend has a riverside of its own. Gravesend Town Pier, built in 1834, is the oldest surviving cast iron pier in the world, and Gordon Gardens has a small lake, mature trees and the statue of General Gordon, while Windmill Hill gives views over the town and the Thames. Across the Medway from Chatham, the Elizabethan artillery fort of Upnor Castle, begun in 1559, has a quieter, rugged feel.

West Kent

The Weald side: Sevenoaks and Tunbridge Wells

In west Kent, Knole stands in a 1,000-acre park that has been a deer park since the fifteenth century, immediately south-east of Sevenoaks. The house inspired Virginia Woolf's Orlando, and the open parkland gives long, uncluttered backgrounds for a walking shot. On the town side, The Vine has the bandstand of 1894 and a weatherboarded cricket pavilion, where Kent played Sussex in 1734.

Tunbridge Wells offers both town and heath. The Pantiles is a Georgian colonnade leading from the chalybeate spring that gave the town its name, with its Walks first laid out in 1638. A short distance away, the Tunbridge Wells and Rusthall commons cover 250 acres of wood and heathland, and the sandstone outcrop of Wellington Rocks sits beside a cricket ground.

We will suggest the time of day for each place. Town settings are quieter early on a weekend morning, while open parkland is at its warmest in the last couple of hours before sunset. If your shoot falls on a busy festival weekend, such as one of Rochester's Dickens Festivals in June or December, we plan for crowds or choose a different spot.

Asian pre-wedding

Pre-wedding shoots for Asian couples in Kent

For Hindu, Sikh, Muslim and other Asian weddings, a pre-wedding shoot is often a bigger production than a casual engagement walk. Couples may want a traditional outfit as well as a smart casual one, a change of location halfway through, or images designed for a wedding website or a large welcome board at the reception. We plan that as a two-part session with a short break to change.

Kent has plenty of variety within a small radius. In Gravesend you could begin by the river and the pier and finish on Windmill Hill, or in Rochester start in Esplanade Gardens and walk up past the cathedral, which has been a place of Christian worship since AD 604. If you are planning a gurdwara wedding at Guru Nanak Darbar, a pre-wedding shoot elsewhere in Gravesend keeps everything local.

Our Asian wedding photography in Kent page explains how multi-day weddings are covered, and Asian wedding photography sets out the rituals from mehndi to reception.

Planning

Timing, travel and what to bring

The sweet spot for an engagement shoot is three to six months before the wedding: soon enough that you still look the same, early enough to use the photos on stationery. Allow about an hour, and pick two outfits at most. Comfortable shoes for walking between spots matter more than people expect on cobbles or parkland.

Because the nearest Kent towns are around 30 miles from Northwood and Canterbury about 68, Kaushik makes the trip to you rather than asking you to cross London, and the travel from Northwood to your chosen Kent spot is quoted in writing before you book. If you happen to be in north-west London, the Northwood studio is also available for a couples session with clean, simple backgrounds.

Town wedding pages such as Rochester, Canterbury and Tunbridge Wells give more local detail, and the Kent photographer hub covers every service in the county.

Planning

Planning around Kent

01

Pick a place that matters

A first-date street in Canterbury or a riverside walk in Rochester means more in an album than a generic backdrop, and it gives the photographs a story.

02

Allow for festival crowds

Rochester's Dickens Festivals in June and December fill the old town, so we either embrace the bustle or choose a quieter morning slot.

03

Shoot three to six months ahead

That gives time to use the images on save-the-dates and to settle any nerves well before the wedding day itself.

04

Two outfits at most

For an Asian pre-wedding shoot, one traditional and one smart casual outfit gives variety without losing half the hour to changing.

05

Travel set out in writing

Kaushik comes from Northwood, and the travel to your chosen Kent setting is written into the quote you receive before booking.

Good to know

Engagement and couples shoots in Kent: questions answered

Around an hour of photography covers two or three spots within walking distance, such as Esplanade Gardens and the castle in Rochester. An Asian pre-wedding shoot with an outfit change usually needs a little longer, and we agree the length when you book.

If your Kent wedding is booked with us, an engagement or pre-wedding shoot can be added to the package as an optional extra. It can also be booked on its own as a couples session. Ask us and we will set out the options and the travel from Northwood in writing.

Spring and early autumn give soft light and comfortable temperatures. Summer evenings are lovely but late, and winter works well for town settings like the Pantiles or Canterbury's streets. We suggest a time of day once we know the location.

Often yes, if the venue agrees. Check with them first, as many venues have their own rules for photography outside a booked event. Otherwise a public place in the same town gives you a feel for the area.

Public parks and streets are usually fine for a small, informal shoot. Some historic sites and paid attractions have their own rules or charges, so we check the site's guidance in advance and suggest public alternatives where needed.

Yes. The Northwood studio suits couples who want clean backgrounds or are already visiting north-west London. It is two minutes from Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line.
