The short answer

When is the right time for a maternity photoshoot in Kent?

Most mothers in Kent book a maternity photoshoot for somewhere between 28 and 34 weeks, when the bump is clearly rounded but walking, kneeling and getting up from the floor are still comfortable. Twins or a planned early delivery can mean shooting a little sooner. Kaushik travels from Northwood to your home or a nearby Kent park, or you can come to the studio, and travel from Northwood is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book.

Our usual session area is within about 20 miles of the studio. Further out in Kent, sessions are by arrangement, with travel quoted in writing before you book.

We had a baby and family photo shoot with Kaushik over the weekend. He was extremely professional and very good with our baby! He has all the tricks and toys to make our little one smile and laugh during the shoot (which kept us entertained too!) would highly recommend Kaushik for baby photo shoots! Many thanks for capturing such beautiful photos for us!

I was nervous about my newborn’s photoshoot but Kaushik made the experience very unforgettable. He knew how to handle my two week old baby with care. The pictures came out very beautiful and were forever grateful. He’s honestly the best. Very experienced, patient and professional. I’ll definitely use him again.

Timing

Picking your week when Kent is 30 miles or more away

The usual window for a maternity photoshoot is 28 to 34 weeks. Before that the bump can read as a loose top in photographs; after it, a long car journey, a walk across parkland or sitting on the floor for a family pose can start to feel like hard work. For a Kent session we suggest fixing a date around week 30, which leaves a spare fortnight if the weather or your energy says no.

Kent is not on our doorstep. Dartford, the nearest large town, is about 30 miles from the studio, and the east of the county is a good deal further. That distance shapes the plan: Kaushik comes to you so that you are not the one sitting in traffic at 32 weeks, and the session is booked for a time of day that suits your energy rather than a fixed studio slot.

If you would rather keep things simple, the studio at 21 Joel Street in Northwood Hills is two minutes from Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line. The trip can be combined with a visit to family or friends in north-west London. Either way, travel from Northwood to your Kent address is set out in your written quote, so the choice is a clear one.

Outdoors

Lakes, orchards and meadows in Kent parks

Water and soft greenery both suit a maternity shoot, and Kent parks give you plenty of each. In Tunbridge Wells, Dunorlan Park wraps around a 6-acre lake fed by the River Teise, in grounds Robert Marnock landscaped for the merchant Henry Reed. In Maidstone, the lake at Mote Park was made by damming the River Len between 1793 and 1800 and now covers around 30 acres of a 440-acre park.

Nearer the London side, Darenth Country Park sits on the grounds of the former Darenth Asylum and has a traditional orchard of more than 150 fruit and nut tree varieties, which is lovely in blossom and again when the fruit sets. Central Park in Dartford has a new wildflower meadow and orchard beside the River Darent, and Sevenoaks Wildlife Reserve, run by Kent Wildlife Trust, has five lakes, reedbeds and woodland on the northern edge of the town.

Further east, Ashford's Victoria Park covers 17 acres and has the Grade II* listed Hubert Fountain, a cast-iron piece from the French Val d'Osne foundry. We choose the spot within any park for the light and for a bench or flat path close by, so you are never more than a few steps from somewhere to sit down.

At home

A maternity session in your own Kent home

Home becomes the easy choice for many people later in the window. A bedroom with a big window, a nursery that is half painted, or a quiet sitting room all work, and nobody has to think about parking or toilets. Kaushik brings portable lighting so that a north-facing room in a Medway terrace or a Weald cottage still gives soft, even light on the bump.

Home also makes it easy to include the things that matter: the scan photos on the fridge, a tiny outfit already bought, the dog who will soon have competition, or an older child pressing an ear to the bump. We take our time over set-ups and you can change between outfits in your own room, which is far more comfortable than a park toilet block.

For a home session we ask for a cleared corner near the main window and about an hour and a half of your day. If you are in east Kent, near Ashford or Canterbury, home is often the most relaxed choice, because the session can begin as soon as Kaushik arrives and you have nowhere else to be.

What to wear

Clothes, colour and the Kent weather

Fitted fabrics show the shape of the bump; floaty ones move beautifully outdoors on a breezy day. A long dress in a plain colour, a soft knit over leggings, or a partner's open shirt over a bare bump are all reliable. Avoid busy prints and logos, and bring a cardigan or a coat that can come off for a few frames between warmer moments.

Kent can be noticeably breezier on open ground such as the commons above Tunbridge Wells than it is in a sheltered town garden, so we pick the setting with the season in mind. Spring blossom and the long light of late summer are favourites for outdoor bump photos, while winter sessions usually move indoors. If you are due in January, a home or studio session in December is the comfortable option.

Partners and children are welcome in some of the frames. Coordinated colours work better than matching outfits, and a few layers mean everyone stays warm during a pause. Tell us about anything you would like to avoid, from a particular angle to a bare bump, and we will plan the poses around it.

Next steps

From the bump to the first weeks at home

Booking maternity and newborn together means the same photographer already knows your home, your style and your light. A newborn session in Kent usually happens in the first 5 to 14 days, and it can also be at home or at the studio. Later on a first birthday cake smash rounds off the year.

Prices for maternity sessions are given on request by phone or WhatsApp on 07956 505383, because the length of the session and the distance into Kent both vary. The Kent photographer guide explains how sessions work across the county, and the Kent family photography page covers bigger group shoots if grandparents want to join in later.

Planning

Planning around Kent

01

Book for week 30

Aim for around 30 weeks, which leaves room to move the date if you feel tired, the weather turns or a midwife appointment lands on the day.

02

Choose a park near you

Dunorlan Park, Mote Park and Darenth Country Park each have flat paths near water or orchard trees, so a short walk gives several different backdrops.

03

Home works late on

From about 33 weeks a home session in your own Kent house is often the comfortable choice, with your bed and kettle close at hand.

04

Distance is quoted

Dartford is about 30 miles from Northwood and Canterbury about 68, and the travel for your exact address appears in your written quote.

05

The studio is an option

If you are visiting north-west London anyway, the Northwood Hills studio gives controlled light and privacy without Kaushik making the trip into Kent.

Maternity sessions across Kent

Kent towns Kaushik travels to for maternity sessions, with the distance from the Northwood studio for each.

Good to know

Maternity photoshoots in Kent: questions answered

Yes. Kaushik travels from Northwood to homes and parks across Kent, from Dartford and Gravesend in the north-west to Ashford and Canterbury in the east. The nearest towns are about 30 miles away and the farthest nearer 70, so travel from Northwood is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book.

For a Kent bump shoot, Kaushik gives the price on request by phone or WhatsApp on 07956 505383. It depends on how long you would like, whether partners or children join in, and where in Kent you live, since the travel from Northwood forms part of the written quote.

For most Kent mums-to-be the 28 to 34 week stretch works well. The bump is clearly visible, and moving between poses is still comfortable. If you are expecting twins, or your midwife has mentioned an early delivery, book nearer 28 weeks to be safe.

Yes. Dunorlan Park in Tunbridge Wells, Mote Park in Maidstone and Darenth Country Park near Dartford all have water or orchard trees and paths that are easy to walk. We plan the route so that a bench or flat ground is never far away.

It depends on you. The studio gives private, controlled light at any time of year and is two minutes from Northwood Hills station, but it is a long trip from most of Kent. Late in pregnancy, having Kaushik come to your Kent home is usually the gentler option.

Of course. Partners, older children and pets can all join for part of the session. We usually photograph the bump on its own first, then bring the family in while everyone is still fresh and patient.

For an outdoor Kent session we watch the forecast together and move the date or switch to your home if it looks wet. Within the 28 to 34 week window there is usually time to rearrange without rushing.

Yes, you can. The newborn session is then pencilled in for the first two weeks after the birth and confirmed once the baby arrives, either in your Kent home or at the studio.

Behind the camera is Kaushik Bathia, established in Northwood since 2001, FBIPP and FMPA, with five European Kodak Gold Awards.
