The short answer

Can a newborn photographer come to my home in Essex?

Yes. Kaushik Bathia photographs newborns at home across Essex, so you and your baby do not need to travel in the first days. The best time is usually 5 to 14 days after birth, when babies sleep deeply. The studio is in Northwood Hills, about 20 miles from Loughton and Chigwell and about 57 from Colchester, so travel is set out in your written quote. You can also bring your baby to the studio. Prices are given by phone or WhatsApp.

Our usual session area is within about 20 miles of the studio. Further out in Essex, sessions are by arrangement, with travel quoted in writing before you book.

We’re so glad we chose Kaushik as our photographer for maternity shoot —he was absolutely fantastic. On the day, he made us feel completely at ease, and the photos turned out superb. He was incredibly accommodating with all our requests and his attentiveness and personable nature were exactly what we hoped for in a photographer. Thank you, Kaushik!

At home

Newborn photography at home in Essex

In the first fortnight, the last thing most parents want is to pack a car with a new baby. A session at home means you stay where everything is to hand: the feeding chair, the changing mat, the cot and the kettle. Kaushik brings soft lighting, wraps and a small posing set-up, and finds the room in your house with the best light, which is often a bedroom or living room with a large window.

Each session is led by the baby. If they need feeding, changing or settling, we stop and wait. Most newborn sessions take a couple of hours for exactly this reason, and nothing about the timing is rushed. The aim is calm, simple photographs of your baby, and of you holding them, in your own home.

Because Essex homes are between about 20 and 57 miles from the studio, we agree a start time that gives a relaxed morning or early afternoon. The travel is shown on your quote, separately from the session price, before you commit. If you would like a family photograph outside as well, that can be added once the baby is settled, weather permitting.

Safety and warmth

Keeping your newborn safe and warm

Newborns lose heat quickly, so we ask for the room to be warmer than you would normally keep it, especially if the baby is photographed in a wrap or nappy. A small heater in the room makes a real difference. Warmth also helps a baby sleep, which makes the gentle, curled-up poses possible without any fuss.

Safety comes before any pose. The baby is always supported, a parent's hands stay close for anything above floor level, and poses that look balanced are made from more than one photograph rather than by leaving a baby in an unsafe position. If a baby is unsettled in a position, we move on.

Hygiene matters too. Wraps and props are clean for each session, and if anyone in the house is unwell on the day, simply tell us and we will move the date. It is always better to rearrange than to bring a cold or a bug into a house with a newborn, and there is no pressure to keep a date that no longer suits the baby.

Timing

When to book a newborn session in Essex

The first 5 to 14 days are usually the best time for a newborn session, because babies sleep deeply and curl naturally. We suggest getting in touch during pregnancy with your due date, then confirming the session date once the baby has arrived. That way there is room in the diary when you need it.

If your baby is a little older, the session still works, but it looks different. Older babies are more awake, so the photographs become more about expressions and family closeness than sleepy posed shots. Babies born early, or families who have had a difficult start, can book whenever the time feels right.

Tell us roughly where in Essex you live when you first contact us, from the Epping Forest towns to Southend or Colchester. It helps us plan the drive from Northwood and set the travel out in your quote. A home visit in Loughton or Chigwell is a short trip by Essex standards, while Southend-on-Sea and Colchester need a longer drive, so a later start can make sense there.

Brothers and sisters

Including older siblings and the wider family

Older brothers and sisters are usually photographed first, while they are fresh and before they lose interest. A photograph of a toddler holding or kissing the new baby is often the one parents treasure most, and we keep the baby safely supported by a parent throughout. Bring a favourite toy or book for the older child, and let them help with small jobs such as choosing a wrap colour, which keeps them involved and happy.

Grandparents are welcome to join for a few photographs at the end of the session. If they live elsewhere in Essex or beyond, arrange for them to arrive once the baby has been fed, so the house stays calm for the main part of the session. A short group photograph with grandparents holding the baby is quick to take and is often one of the photographs families print first.

Studio and follow-ons

The Northwood studio option and later sessions

Some Essex parents prefer to come to the studio, either to avoid the travel cost or because their home is busy with visitors. The studio is at 21 Joel Street, Northwood Hills, two minutes from Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line, and it is set up for babies, with warmth, wraps and backgrounds ready.

You can book more than one session. A maternity photoshoot in the last weeks of pregnancy pairs naturally with the newborn session, and a cake smash photoshoot marks the first birthday. For a christening or naming ceremony, see christening photography, and for the wider family there is family photography in Essex. The baby photography page covers the later months, and the Essex overview lists every service.

Planning

Planning around Essex

01

Book before the birth

Get in touch with your due date during pregnancy, then confirm the session once your baby arrives, ideally in the first 5 to 14 days.

02

Warm the room

A warmer room helps your newborn sleep and keeps them comfortable during wrapped or nappy photographs. A small heater in the room is usually enough for the session.

03

Studio as an alternative

If the drive to your Essex home does not suit, bring your baby to Northwood Hills, two minutes from the station.

04

Siblings first

Older children are photographed at the start of the session, while they are still keen, with the baby always supported by a parent.

05

Travel set out in writing

Essex homes are about 20 to 57 miles from the studio, and the travel for your visit is shown on your quote before you book.
