The short answer

Can a newborn photographer come to our home in East London?

Yes. Kaushik Bathia photographs newborns at home in Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest, Newham and Redbridge, between about 16 and 20 miles from Northwood. The best time is the first 5 to 14 days, when babies sleep deeply and curl up naturally. The session follows your baby's feeds and sleeps rather than a clock. Travel from Northwood is set out in your written quote before you book, and the session price is given by phone or WhatsApp on 07956 505383.

Kaushik has photographed my wife and me for the bump to baby photo shoot. We really enjoyed it. He knows how to make us smile and look happy and relaxed. We really appreciate his work and we look forward to meet him on our next appointment for the newborn photo shoot! Thank you again Kaushik!

I was nervous about my newborn’s photoshoot but Kaushik made the experience very unforgettable. He knew how to handle my two week old baby with care. The pictures came out very beautiful and were forever grateful. He’s honestly the best. Very experienced, patient and professional. I’ll definitely use him again.

We had a great experience with our family photoshoot. The photographer made everyone feel relaxed and comfortable, which really shows in the final photos. The images are natural, well-captured, and beautifully edited. We’re all really happy with the results and would highly recommend.

Timing

Booking an East London newborn session before the due date

The window that photographs best is the first 5 to 14 days, while babies sleep deeply and curl naturally. Nobody knows the exact day a baby will arrive, so get in touch during pregnancy with your due date. We pencil in a provisional date around it, then you send a message after the birth and the session is fixed for a day inside that first fortnight.

If your baby comes early, needs a little longer in hospital or feeding takes a while to settle, the plan moves with you. A baby of three or four weeks still gives lovely pictures; they are simply more awake, so you get more open-eyed portraits and fewer of the tightly curled poses. The point is a calm session, not a deadline.

At home

What a newborn session looks like in an East London home

Kaushik sets up in the warmest room you have, which is often the one where the baby already sleeps. Turn the heating up a little before he arrives: a baby in only a nappy or a soft wrap needs a warm room to settle, and a warm baby sleeps through more of the session. A clear patch of floor near a window is enough, because soft window light does much of the work in a newborn portrait.

Comfort and safety come before every picture. Each pose is led by your baby's mood, nothing is forced, and if your baby would rather be held than placed, the pictures follow that. Feeds, nappy changes and cuddles happen whenever they are needed and the session simply pauses. A terraced house in Leyton, a flat near Canary Wharf or a semi in Gants Hill all work, since what matters is a warm, quiet room rather than space.

Brothers and sisters

Older siblings and visiting grandparents

Older brothers and sisters are welcome, and the first pictures can be theirs: a toddler on the sofa holding the new baby with a parent just out of shot. Keep that part short and early, while the older child is fresh and curious, then let them go off to play while the baby is photographed on their own. A favourite snack set aside for afterwards helps.

If grandparents are coming over from Chingford, Ilford or wherever they live, ask them to arrive once the baby's own portraits are done. The house stays calm for the delicate part, and then everyone can gather for a family group with the newest member in the middle. A few pictures of hands, grandparents' and baby's together, are worth planning for.

The distance

From Northwood Hills to Hackney, Stratford and Ilford

Hackney is about 16 miles from Northwood, Walthamstow and Tower Hamlets about 17, and Forest Gate, Newham and Redbridge between 19 and 20. That is why newborn sessions here happen in your home rather than asking you to travel with a baby a few days old. The travel from Northwood is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book, next to the session price.

The other option is the Northwood studio, two minutes' walk from Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line, which is kept warm and calm for newborns. It suits parents who would rather keep visitors out of the house in the first weeks. Either way, the national newborn and baby photography page sets out each stage of the first year.

The first year

Bump, newborn and first birthday, all in East London

You can start before the birth. A maternity session in East London is best between 28 and 34 weeks, and it can be booked together with the newborn session as one package. After that, sitter portraits at around 6 to 9 months, once your baby sits unaided, and a first birthday cake smash at around 11 to 13 months round off the year.

When the baby is a few months old and you are out and about again, an outdoor family session in Victoria Park, Lloyd Park or Valentines Park makes a natural next chapter, and a christening or naming day can be covered too. The borough pages for Hackney and Redbridge have more local detail, and the East London photographer page lists every service.

Planning

Planning around East London

01

Message us after the birth

Once your baby arrives, a short text or WhatsApp is all it takes. The provisional date set around your due date then becomes a fixed day in the first fortnight.

02

Warm the room first

Turn the heating up before the session starts. A warm room helps a baby in a wrap settle and sleep, and sleeping babies give the gentlest poses.

03

Siblings at the start

Photograph older brothers and sisters early, while they are fresh. Then they can play while the baby has their own quiet portraits.

04

Parks can wait

The first fortnight stays indoors. Victoria Park, Lloyd Park or Valentines Park come into their own for a family session a few months later.

  • Lloyd Park: Lloyd Park on Forest Road, Walthamstow (E17 4PP), a Green Flag park renovated in 2012, has original terraced gardens, a moat with an island and the William Morris Gallery, and the council publishes a dog map showing where dogs may be off the lead. 1
  • London Fields: London Fields is a Green Flag park with a lido, a wildflower meadow, a cricket pitch and two play areas, and dogs are not allowed in the play areas or sports facilities. 2
  • Ridgeway Park, Chingford: Ridgeway Park in Chingford (E4 6RS) is a Green Flag park with a summer miniature railway that Walt Disney visited in 1954, and dogs there must be kept on a lead. 3
  • Victoria Park dog rule: In Victoria Park dogs are not allowed in the children's play areas, and the park's byelaws apply elsewhere. 4
  • West Ham Park: West Ham Park on Upton Lane (E7 9PU), on Forest Gate's southern side, covers 77 acres, is Newham's largest park and has been owned and run by the City of London Corporation since 1874. 5

Good to know

Newborn photography in East London: questions answered

During pregnancy, ideally in the second or early third trimester. Send your due date and we pencil in a provisional date around it, then fix the session once your baby arrives, aiming for the first 5 to 14 days. Babies sleep most deeply in that window.

Yes. A newborn session needs a warm, quiet room and a little floor space near a window, not a large house. A flat in Hackney or near Canary Wharf works just as well as a family home in Woodford or Leytonstone.

Yes. Every pose is led by your baby, nothing is forced, and comfort and safety come first throughout. The session stops for feeds, changes and cuddles whenever they are needed, and if a pose does not suit your baby, it is simply skipped.

Every East London borough on this page is within about 20 miles of Northwood: Hackney about 16, Walthamstow and Tower Hamlets about 17, and Forest Gate, Newham and Redbridge between 19 and 20. Travel is quoted up front and set out in your written quote before you book.

The plan moves with your baby. The provisional date is only there to hold space, and once you message us after the birth the session is set inside the first fortnight where possible. A baby of three or four weeks still photographs beautifully.

Have a feed ready, spare babygrows, a dummy if you use one and a favourite wrap or blanket. Warm the room beforehand, and clear a small patch of floor near the brightest window.

Yes. Parents and siblings are welcome in the frame. We photograph older children first, while they are fresh, and then give the baby a calm stretch of their own.

Session prices are given on request by phone or WhatsApp on 07956 505383, depending on the session and what you would like to take home. Travel from Northwood appears on the same written quote.
