Book near, not on, the party
A cake smash a few days before or after the first birthday party keeps your baby rested and happy. Party days rarely leave energy for a second celebration.

A first birthday cake smash for Hackney, Walthamstow, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Ilford takes place at the Northwood studio, with the option of a family session back in an East London park afterwards.
The short answer
The cake smash takes place at the Northwood studio, 16 to 20 miles from the East London boroughs, and the backdrop and props are ready at the studio when you arrive. A few tidy portraits come first, then your baby meets the cake you have brought, and the session can end with a splash. Allow one to two hours at the studio plus the drive. Prices are given on 07956 505383. If you add a family session in an East London park, its travel from Northwood is set out in your written quote.
Great service! Kaushik was able to capture some beautiful shots for my maternity baby and bump shoot. He was very helpful and guided me with the poses throughout the shoot. I love the pictures & I’m looking forward to having the final edits!
Really appreciated the effort that went into the photoshoot and getting my baby to smile for the photos. Lovely photos to take home. Would recommend.
We had a family shoot at the studio, Kaushik took some wonderful photos. He was excellent with the kids and was very good at making them smile naturally, the end results were brilliant. We purchased a canvas and 2 further large framed photos. All completed on time and to perfection. Very pleased.
Timing the birthday
The national cake smash page puts the sweet spot at roughly 11 to 13 months, when a baby can sit steadily on their own and wants to grab whatever is put in front of them. The cake comes from you, and a soft sponge gives small fists the best chance of breaking in. Everything else, the backdrop and the props, is waiting at the studio.
Pick a day a little before or after any big family party, so your baby comes to Northwood rested rather than still recovering from the celebrations. Sessions are booked in advance by phone or WhatsApp, so get in touch a few weeks before the birthday and choose a date that sits around nursery, visits from relatives and whatever else the birthday week holds.

The drive west
Every cake smash happens at the Northwood studio, 21 Joel Street in Northwood Hills, and from East London that is a real journey: about 16 miles from Hackney, about 17 from Walthamstow and Tower Hamlets, and 19 to 20 from Forest Gate, Newham and Redbridge. Treat it as a morning out rather than a quick errand, and leave a margin for traffic.
The simplest plan is to let the journey and the nap overlap. If your baby sleeps in the car seat, set off so the nap happens on the road, and you arrive with a rested child instead of one who has been awake and strapped in for an hour. There is parking close to the studio, and Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line is two minutes' walk from the door if you come by train.
Once you are inside, there is time for a feed, a nappy change and a cuddle before anything starts. Kaushik takes a few tidy portraits in the outfit you chose, then brings the cake in and follows your baby's lead, however enthusiastic or wary they turn out to be. A splash can finish the session, and nothing is forced if your baby has had enough.
Brothers, sisters and outfits
Parents and older brothers and sisters can join the tidy portraits before the cake appears, which gives you a family picture from the birthday week while everyone is still clean. Decide before the day whether an older sibling is allowed to help with the smash or stays a cheerful spectator, because a five-year-old from Leytonstone will certainly ask.
Pack a change of clothes, plenty of wipes, a towel and a favourite toy, and bring one special outfit for the portraits plus a simple one that comes off easily afterwards. Choose colours that sit well together rather than a busy pattern, so the pictures stay calm however the cake ends up.

Back in East London
The cake stays at the studio. Victoria Park's byelaws apply across the park, and food mess on a public lawn is unfair on other visitors, so the park part of a first birthday is a clean family session instead, and that one comes to you. Leyton Jubilee Park, Waltham Forest's biggest, has a pirate-ship play area and an avenue of London plane trees more than 100 years old, which gives a toddler something to head for between frames.
In Walthamstow, Higham Hill Park has toddler and junior play areas, a field and a café, and in Ilford, Valentines Park has two cafés around the gardens of Valentines Mansion. Stepney Green Park in Tower Hamlets has a separate play area for under-fives. A family session in East London can happen in any of them or at home, with travel from Northwood set out in your written quote.
The national cake smash page explains the studio session in more detail, the East London newborn page covers the start of the year, and our East London photographer page lists every service.
Planning
A cake smash a few days before or after the first birthday party keeps your baby rested and happy. Party days rarely leave energy for a second celebration.
From Hackney or Ilford the studio is a 16 to 20 mile trip, so set off so the car-seat nap falls on the journey and your baby arrives ready to play.
For the follow-on family session, Leyton Jubilee Park's pirate-ship play area gives a new walker a reason to keep moving between pictures.
Higham Hill Park has a café beside its toddler play area, a practical base if the family session in Walthamstow runs into snack time.
East London parks for the follow-on family session after a cake smash, each linked to its source.

Good to know
Close to the first birthday but away from the party itself, at the time of day your baby is usually happiest. Book a few weeks ahead by phone or WhatsApp, so the date lands where you want it and leaves room to move if your baby is unwell.
The cake smash takes place at the Northwood studio, where the backdrop and props are ready, about 16 miles from Hackney. If you would also like pictures in your own flat or house, a family session at home can be booked separately.
Yes. Leyton Jubilee Park has an avenue of century-old plane trees, a woodland walk and a pirate-ship play area, which suits a toddler celebrating a first birthday. That session comes to you, and its travel from Northwood is set out in your written quote.
No, the cake stays at the studio. Park byelaws apply in Victoria Park and elsewhere, and leaving a sticky picnic blanket on a shared lawn is unfair on other visitors. A clean first birthday portrait outdoors, without the cake, works well in Victoria Park or Lloyd Park as part of a family session.
Allow one to two hours in the studio, covering the tidy portraits, the cake and the splash finish, plus the drive from East London each way. Breaks for a feed or a cuddle fit in whenever your baby needs them, so there is no need to rush.
Northwood Hills is about 16 miles from Hackney, about 17 from Walthamstow and Tower Hamlets, and 19 to 20 from Newham, Forest Gate and Redbridge. There is parking close by, and Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line is two minutes' walk from the studio door.

Every session is photographed by Kaushik Bathia himself, FBIPP and FMPA, holder of five European Kodak Gold Awards, who opened the Northwood studio in 2001.
