Lloyd Park splits a family session in a way worth understanding before anyone sets out, because its two halves suit two different sizes of group. The formal gardens are laid out in beds and paths, so a party of eight spreads along them and half of it disappears behind planting; the gardens are for pairs, for one child alone, and for grandparents seated where they can still watch. The open lawns are the reverse. Nothing interrupts them, so an entire family fits into a single frame with nobody hidden, and a child who has finished with standing still can run about instead, which is generally where the keepers come from. Ground surface decides the order we work in. Paths through the gardens are made up and even, which is what a pram, a walking stick or a tired three-year-old wants; grass takes days to firm up once it has been thoroughly wet, so while it is soft the wheels stay on the paths and lawn frames wait for another visit. Footwear deserves a thought for the same reason. Small children, not the forecast and not us, set how long a session lasts. Expect a decent stretch of real cooperation followed by a decline, and put the arranged frame near the start of that stretch rather than the end. When wind gets up or daylight goes early, working indoors in Northwood does the job instead, and nobody spends a morning getting cold in order to be photographed.
