The short answer

Can a newborn photographer come to our home in North London?

Yes. Kaushik Bathia photographs newborns at home across North London, from Mill Hill and Hendon, about 8 miles from Northwood, to Islington, Enfield and Edmonton, about 14 to 15. The best time is the first 5 to 14 days, when babies sleep deeply and curl naturally, and the session is led by feeds and settling rather than a clock. Travel is set out in your written quote before you book, and prices are given on request.

We had a baby and family photo shoot with Kaushik over the weekend. He was extremely professional and very good with our baby! He has all the tricks and toys to make our little one smile and laugh during the shoot (which kept us entertained too!) would highly recommend Kaushik for baby photo shoots! Many thanks for capturing such beautiful photos for us!

Krishma L., Google review, 2022

We’re so glad we chose Kaushik as our photographer for maternity shoot —he was absolutely fantastic. On the day, he made us feel completely at ease, and the photos turned out superb. He was incredibly accommodating with all our requests and his attentiveness and personable nature were exactly what we hoped for in a photographer. Thank you, Kaushik!

I was nervous about how my 2 year old would react, but we had a great photo session! Kaushik had plenty of props to keep my son entertained, laughing, and happily posing.Afterward, he was incredibly patient as we went through every single photo to pick our favorites, even though we kept changing our minds. I highly recommend his service and will definitely be back once my second baby is born!

Timing

Planning before the birth, photographing in the first fortnight

The window for a curled, sleepy newborn picture is short: roughly the first 5 to 14 days after the birth. For a family in Barnet, Southgate or Kentish Town, that means getting in touch during the third trimester with the due date, so a session can be planned for that fortnight, and then confirming the day by phone or WhatsApp once the baby has arrived. Babies rarely keep to the calendar, so the date moves with them.

If you are reading this after the birth, call 07956 505383 with the baby's date of birth and your neighbourhood, and we look for the earliest morning still inside the window. Babies older than two weeks photograph beautifully too, simply more awake, with more stretching and more expression, and the session is shaped around that.

Give the whole morning over to it, with no visitors booked and the phone on silent. A newborn session cannot be hurried: there is time built in for feeds, nappy changes and cuddles, and the pictures come in the quiet stretches between them.

At home

Turning one North London room into a warm, bright corner

A newborn session at home needs one warm room and one good window. In a Victorian terrace in Hornsey or Kentish Town that is often the front room with the bay; in a mansion flat in Hampstead or a top-floor flat in Camden or Islington it may be the bedroom with the biggest window. Turn the heating up an hour before Kaushik arrives, because a sleeping baby with few layers needs the room warmer than adults find comfortable.

Have a couple of soft blankets or a favourite wrap ready, with spare babygrows, nappies, and a dummy if you use one. A clear patch of floor by the window, a sofa for feeding and somewhere to change nappies is all the set the morning needs. Handling is gentle throughout and led by the baby's mood and feeding times, and you are welcome to stay right beside your baby for every picture.

Detail pictures matter as much as the full-length ones: the curl of a hand, the creases of a foot, the hair at the nape of the neck. Close-ups like these need nothing more than the window light, which is why the room choice matters more than any prop.

Siblings and parents

Older brothers and sisters, and the two of you

Older siblings photograph best at the start, before the novelty wears off. A few pictures of a toddler leaning in to kiss the baby on the sofa, and then they can head out with a grandparent: Cherry Tree Wood, opposite East Finchley station, has a playground and a café, and Town Park on Cecil Road in Enfield has a playground and water play for older children.

Parents are welcome in the frame and often make the most tender pictures of the set: a hand cradling the head, the baby asleep on a chest, the three of you together on the bed. Wear plain, soft tops in neutral colours so the baby stays the focus, and skip anything with a slogan or a bright pattern.

Grandparents visiting from elsewhere can join for a short group at the end, once the baby has fed and settled. Tell us who is coming when you book, so the quieter, sleepier pictures come first and the busier family groups follow.

The journey

Hendon to Edmonton: what the distance means for a newborn session

Home sessions are the natural choice in North London because nobody has to travel with a baby a few days old. Hendon and Mill Hill are the nearest neighbourhoods, about 8 miles from Northwood; Golders Green and West Hampstead are just under 10; Highgate and Belsize Park are about 11; Palmers Green, Winchmore Hill and Islington run to 13 or 14; and Enfield, Tottenham and Edmonton are around 15.

Travel from Northwood to your home is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book, alongside the session itself, so the full cost is clear when you decide. If a newborn session away from home suits you better, the Northwood studio on Joel Street is kept warm and calm, two minutes from Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line.

Parking near your front door helps on the morning, as there are bags to carry in. If you live on a street where spaces are hard to find, mention it when you book, along with any stairs or a lift, so the arrival is quick and quiet.

What comes next

From the bump to the first birthday

A newborn session sits in the middle of a year of pictures. Before the birth, a maternity session in North London between 28 and 34 weeks can happen at home or in a park such as Waterlow Park on the Highgate hillside. Around 6 to 9 months, once the baby sits unaided, a sitter session catches the first real expressions and the first teeth.

At about 11 to 13 months comes the first birthday: see the cake smash page for North London. Families marking a christening or naming day in that first year can read the christening guide for the area.

Your newborn gallery arrives online so you can choose favourites at your own pace, without deciding anything on the morning. Prints, framed wall art and a hand-finished album can follow, and baby photography explains each stage of that first year in more detail.

Planning

Planning around North London

01

Get in touch before the birth

Call with the due date in the third trimester, so a session in the first 5 to 14 days can be planned, then confirm the day once the baby arrives.

02

Warm the room first

Turn the heating up about an hour beforehand. A sleeping newborn with few layers needs a warmer room than adults are used to.

03

Light from the bay window

Victorian and Edwardian houses in Finchley, Muswell Hill and Hornsey often have bay or tall sash windows. That soft side light is exactly what newborn pictures need.

04

Flats work just as well

A top-floor flat in Camden or Islington suits a newborn session as well as a house. Mention stairs or a lift when you book.

05

Siblings in the first half hour

Photograph the older child early, then a grandparent can take them to a nearby playground while the baby sleeps.

Good to know

Newborn photography in North London: questions answered

Yes. Hampstead is about 10.5 miles from Northwood, and Highgate and Muswell Hill about 11 to 12, so Kaushik comes to your home with the camera. The session sets up beside your brightest window and moves at the baby's pace. Travel from Northwood to a Hampstead or Highgate home is set out in your written quote before you book.

Ideally in the first 5 to 14 days, when newborns sleep deeply and curl up naturally. Get in touch with your due date before the birth, then confirm by phone or WhatsApp once the baby arrives, and we find a morning inside that fortnight.

That is normal, and the date simply moves. Let us know as soon as the baby is born, and we look for the earliest morning available within the first two weeks. If the window has passed, an older baby session works well too.

Yes. Older babies are more awake and less curled, so the pictures show more stretching, wide eyes and expression rather than the tightly curled sleepy poses. Some parents prefer that livelier look.

Plan for the whole morning. The session follows feeds, changes and settling rather than a clock, so it is never hurried. Older siblings are usually photographed first, and family groups come once the baby has fed.

No. A clear patch of floor by a good window, a sofa for feeding and somewhere warm is all that is needed. Flats in Islington and Camden work perfectly well; the window matters more than the size of the room.

Prices are given on request by phone or WhatsApp on 07956 505383, and depend on the session and what you would like to take home. Travel from Northwood to your home is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book.
