Hire spaces

Arts centres and halls for hire, from Tally Ho Corner to Belsize Park

North London's arts centres double as event spaces. artsdepot at Tally Ho Corner in North Finchley, opened in 2004, hires out its Pentland Theatre, a flexible and fully accessible modern auditorium used for performances, award ceremonies, banquets and conferences, along with a black-box studio space. The stage, raked seating and level floor mean an awards night there has three different kinds of picture to plan for: the presenters, the audience and the tables.

In Belsize Park, the Old Town Hall is a 140-year-old Grade II listed building that has been home to the arts charity Wac Arts since 2001, with halls, studios and meeting rooms for hire. On Upper Street, the Business Design Centre, once the Royal Agricultural Hall of 1862, runs exhibitions and conferences, and The Trampery at 239 Old Street has a 200-person Ballroom. For any hall, a walk-through before guests arrive sorts out where speeches will happen and where groups can be lined up.

Christenings

Christenings at St Mary's Hendon, Christ Church Southgate and Hampstead Garden Suburb

The area's parish churches range across eight centuries. The oldest fabric of St Mary's Church in Hendon dates from the 13th century and its 50 ft tower from about 1450, and Sunny Hill Park lies right beside its churchyard for family groups afterwards. Christ Church near Southgate Green has windows by William Morris's firm, including an early St Matthew design by Morris himself, and Christ Church on Cockfosters Road was founded in 1839.

In Hampstead Garden Suburb, St Jude-on-the-Hill and the Free Church stand on Central Square, both major public buildings by Sir Edwin Lutyens, and Temple Fortune also has the Catholic Church of St Edward the Confessor and St Mary and Archangel Michael Coptic Orthodox Church. Every church sets its own rules for photography during a service, so ask the vicar or priest beforehand and pass on what they say; Kaushik works within it. The christening photography page and christenings in North London cover the day in full.

Family celebrations

Golders Green, Palmers Green and Southgate: celebrations in many traditions

North London's communities bring their own celebrations. In the 2021 census 49.9% of Golders Green's residents identified as Jewish, Palmers Green is home to the largest population of Greek Cypriots outside Cyprus and is often called Little Cyprus, and Southgate has a long-established Jewish community alongside Greek, Greek Cypriot, Japanese and Turkish families. A bar or bat mitzvah party, a name-day lunch or a big family birthday all need the same care: the guest of honour, the relatives who travelled, the speeches and the cake.

Tottenham became one of the most ethnically diverse areas in Britain after Windrush-era settlement and has since drawn residents from Africa, Asia, South America and Eastern Europe, so a party there may mix several traditions in one evening. Tell us the running order and which moments matter, whether that is a toast, a dance or a blessing, and the coverage is planned around them. Parties held at home are covered just as readily as those in a hall.

Corporate events

Launches, conferences and networking around Brent Cross, Old Street and Wood Green

For companies the brief is speakers, candid moments and branding, captured without getting in the way. A launch at a new office in Brent Cross Town, a networking breakfast at a coworking space near Old Street or a council awards evening near Haringey Civic Centre in Wood Green each needs the stage, the audience, the sponsors' banners and a few clean portraits of the people who spoke.

Agree the shot list beforehand: arrival, the opening address, panel sessions, the award handovers and the groups your marketing team will want. A selection of edited highlights arrives within a few working days for press and social media, and the complete edited gallery follows shortly after. The national event photography page covers corporate coverage in more detail.

Public days

Barnet Fair, market days and community mornings

Some of the area's events are centuries old. King John granted Barnet a market charter in 1199, and Barnet Fair, a horse fair dating back to 1588, is still held each September. Kentish Town City Farm, off Grafton Road, was founded in 1972 as the UK's first city farm, and a free weekly 5k parkrun starts on the north side of the lake in Grovelands Park.

Organisers of community days, open days and fundraisers may need pictures for sponsors, grant reports and next year's publicity. In public spaces Kaushik photographs the event as a whole and takes close-ups of children only where parents have agreed. Travel from Northwood is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book, and the Northwood studio can be used for any portraits you want of volunteers or committee members afterwards.

Planning

Planning around North London

01

Hendon's churchyard park

St Mary's in Hendon sits beside Sunny Hill Park, 22 hectares on high ground with views north and west, so christening groups can move outdoors without a drive.

02

Lutyens's Central Square

St Jude-on-the-Hill and the Free Church face each other across Central Square in Hampstead Garden Suburb, giving a christening or blessing a formal setting for the family group.

03

Pentland Theatre at artsdepot

An awards evening or conference in artsdepot's Pentland Theatre at Tally Ho Corner is photographed from the aisles and the side of the stage so the audience view stays clear.

04

Barnet Fair in September

Barnet Fair, a horse fair dating back to 1588, is held each September, so a community group or charity stall there can plan coverage around the fair's dates.
