Sally, Google review, 2018

My two sisters and I ‘ the golden girls’ had a great, hilarious photo session. Kaushik is very professional and took some amazing photos especially when we were laughing so much trying to get up from the floor. Can’t wait to see ‘air brushed’ version. Well at 75 you need a little help. Definitely recommend Kashuik. He enjoyed our craziness!

The shape of the area

Five boroughs, from the Mill Hill ridge to the Lea marshes

North London, as we use the term here, covers the boroughs of Barnet, Camden, Haringey, Enfield and Islington. Barnet is the side nearest Northwood: Mill Hill is about 8 miles from us, Hendon 8.2 and Chipping Barnet 8.6. Camden and Islington run south towards the centre, with Hampstead at 10.5 miles and Islington at 14.1. Haringey and Enfield fill the north-east, out to Wood Green at 13, Enfield Town at 14.6 and Edmonton at about 15.

It is a long and varied stretch. Mill Hill still has open countryside and Green Belt either side of the medieval Ridgeway, while Camden Town grew up around the Regent's Canal, cut through in 1816, and a railway terminal that followed in 1837. Highgate reaches 136 metres above sea level, and Tottenham Marshes, beside the River Lea, are one of the last semi-natural wetlands in Greater London. Each of those settings asks for a different plan on the day.

Getting to you

What 8 to 15 miles from Northwood means for a North London booking

None of these towns is on our doorstep, and we would rather say so plainly. Every North London session is one where Kaushik comes to you: your living room in Whetstone, a walk in Trent Country Park near Cockfosters, a meeting room in Wood Green or the hall where your party is held. If you would rather come to us, the studio at 21 Joel Street, Northwood Hills, is two minutes from Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line.

Travel from Northwood is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book, so the Barnet side and the Enfield side each get an honest figure. The western towns, Mill Hill, Hendon, Barnet and Finchley, are the shortest trips. Islington, Enfield, Tottenham and Edmonton, at 14 to 15 miles, are the longest, so it is worth agreeing a start time that suits the journey.

Weddings

Register offices in Hendon, Wood Green, Enfield and on Upper Street

Each borough runs its own ceremony rooms. Barnet's register office moved to Hendon Town Hall on The Burroughs in February 2017, a Grade II listed building of 1901 whose Heritage Room seats up to 45 and Council Chamber up to 100. Haringey's is at George Meehan House on Wood Green High Road, with rooms for 22, 52 and 79 people and a garden licensed for up to 20 guests between May and September.

Enfield holds ceremonies in the Admiral's Suite at 1 Gentleman's Row, a Georgian building with a rear courtyard and the New River at the front. Islington Town Hall on Upper Street has seven ceremony rooms for between 2 and 85 guests, and Camden marries couples at its town hall on Judd Street, opposite St Pancras. Our North London wedding guide sets out how each one shapes the day.

Outdoors

Heath, ancient woods and Victorian parks, and the permits some of them need

Green space is one of the area's strengths. Hampstead Heath covers 320 hectares between Hampstead and Highgate, Highgate Wood and Queen's Wood are ancient woodland, Alexandra Park has 196 acres round the palace, and Trent Country Park near Cockfosters runs to about 320 hectares of Green Belt with lakes and a lime avenue. Smaller parks such as Broomfield Park in Palmers Green, Grovelands in Southgate and Victoria Park in Finchley suit a short family walk.

Some of these places have rules a family or couple should know before a shoot. The City of London asks for a permit for photography on Hampstead Heath and offers a two-hour weekday licence for handheld portrait and engagement sessions at the Hill Garden and Pergola. Alexandra Palace asks every photographer, amateur or professional, to hold a permit for Alexandra Park, and Primrose Hill falls under the Royal Parks permit system. Tell us the park you have in mind and we will look at its current rules with you.

Where next

Finding the right North London town page

Every town has its own page with local detail. On the Barnet side, start with Mill Hill, Finchley or Barnet. In Camden, try Hampstead and Camden Town; in Haringey, Muswell Hill and Wood Green; and in Enfield, Southgate and Enfield. Islington has its own page at Islington.

If you live on the edge of the area, a neighbouring guide may fit better. Mill Hill sits near the Hertfordshire border, and the towns to its west are on our North West London page. Cockfosters and Enfield run up towards Hertfordshire too, so the Hertfordshire guide is worth a look if you are just over the line.

Newborn sessions in your own home

Newborns are photographed at home, ideally in the first 5 to 14 days, in a warm room with the baby fed and settled first. A home session in Hampstead, Southgate or Muswell Hill means no journey for a baby who is only days old, and older siblings can join for a few frames. See baby photography and the North London newborn page.

Dog and pet photography

Dogs are photographed at home or on a walk, and local rules matter. Dogs must be on a lead in Golders Hill Park, Totteridge Fields asks for leads because cattle graze its meadows, and Enfield's 2025 order keeps dogs on leads in the Trent Country Park Water Garden. See pet photography and the North London pet page.

Yes, with the right permission. Weekend sessions work better in another park or at your home.

Yes, for any shoot in the park: the palace's rules cover amateurs and professionals alike. If you would like the rose garden, the boating lake or the London views there, tell us early so the permit can be arranged for your date. Alexandra Palace itself says it cannot host weddings or private parties.

Enfield Register Office is at 1 Gentleman's Row in Enfield Town, with ceremonies in the Admiral's Suite, named after Admiral Sir Edward Thornborough. There is a rear courtyard where guests can throw confetti. Enfield also approves its Council Chamber at the Civic Centre on Silver Street for up to 122 guests, 72 in the chamber and 50 in the gallery.

Yes. Family, newborn and pet sessions happen at your home or in a park near you. Muswell Hill is about 11.6 miles from Northwood, with Highgate Wood and Alexandra Park both nearby for outdoor pictures. Travel from Northwood is shown in your quote before you book, and session prices are given on request.

Yes. Kaushik brings the kit to your office, whether that is near the Old Street roundabout, in a Clerkenwell showroom or in a workspace on Upper Street, and sets up in a meeting room.
