The short answer

Can a newborn photographer come to our home in Hertfordshire?

Yes. Kaushik Bathia photographs newborns at home across Hertfordshire, from Oxhey and Watford to St Albans, Hertford and Hitchin, bringing wraps, props and soft backdrops. Most sessions take place between 5 and 14 days after birth, when babies sleep deeply. You can also visit the Northwood Hills studio, 3.8 miles from Watford. Prices are given on request, and travel from Northwood is set out in writing before you book.

Our usual session area is within about 20 miles of the studio. Further out in Hertfordshire, sessions are by arrangement, with travel quoted in writing before you book.

I was nervous about my newborn’s photoshoot but Kaushik made the experience very unforgettable. He knew how to handle my two week old baby with care. The pictures came out very beautiful and were forever grateful. He’s honestly the best. Very experienced, patient and professional. I’ll definitely use him again.

Kaushik has photographed my wife and me for the bump to baby photo shoot. We really enjoyed it. He knows how to make us smile and look happy and relaxed. We really appreciate his work and we look forward to meet him on our next appointment for the newborn photo shoot! Thank you again Kaushik!

Fantastic service, Kaushik captured some amazing shots of our family. He is patient, professional, friendly and creative which really helps when trying to get pictures with young children. You never feel rushed and the final product will be something we cherish for years to come. This was our second time with Kaushik and we will be going back again. We have no hesitation in recommending him. Thank you Kaushik!

At home

Newborn sessions at home anywhere in Hertfordshire

In the first fortnight, staying home is usually easiest for new parents. Kaushik brings the wraps, props and backdrops needed to turn a corner of your living room or bedroom into a small studio, and asks you to keep that room warm. You stay in your own space, the feeds happen where they normally would, and nobody has to pack a changing bag for a car journey.

A home session works in every part of Hertfordshire, whether you live in a Watford terrace, a house in Harpenden or a cottage near Royston. A room with a large window gives the gentlest light, and we keep the heating turned up for your baby's comfort. The session usually takes two to three hours, because babies set the pace, not the clock.

Safety and timing

Why the first 5 to 14 days matter, and how your baby stays safe

Babies photographed between about 5 and 14 days old tend to sleep deeply and curl easily into the settled poses parents love. If your baby arrives early or late, or the first week is harder than expected, we simply move the date. Contact us during pregnancy with your due date, then message once your baby is born, and Kaushik will fit the session into that window.

Safety comes before any pose. Your baby is kept warm, supported at all times and never placed in a position that relies on balance. A parent is always within reach, the room is kept warm throughout, and nothing is rushed to get a particular shot. The session pauses whenever your baby needs feeding, changing or cuddling.

The studio

Visiting the Northwood studio from Hertfordshire

Some parents like the idea of a dedicated space, with everything set up before they arrive. The studio is at 21 Joel Street in Northwood Hills, two minutes from Northwood Hills station on the Metropolitan line. That is the same line that runs through Rickmansworth and Chorleywood, so families on that side of the county have a direct route without needing the car.

By road, the studio is 1.8 miles from Oxhey, 2.3 from Carpenders Park, 3.6 from Bushey and Rickmansworth and 3.8 from Watford. The room is kept warm and quiet, there is space to feed and change your baby in comfort, and siblings or grandparents are welcome to come along for the family photographs at the end.

Distance

From Oxhey to Royston: newborn sessions across the county

For families in the south-west of the county, home sessions are close by. Watford, Croxley Green, Abbots Langley and Kings Langley are all within eight miles of Northwood, so Kaushik can arrive with time to set up the room properly before your baby wakes for the next feed, without anyone feeling hurried.

The middle of Hertfordshire, including St Albans (10.9 miles), Hemel Hempstead (10.6), Hatfield (13.7) and Welwyn Garden City (16.4), is a straightforward drive. In the east and north, Hertford is 19.6 miles out, Stevenage 22.6, Hitchin 24.6 and Royston 34.9. Kaushik travels to all of these for newborn sessions, and travel from Northwood is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book, so you can weigh up a home visit against coming to the studio.

The whole family

Siblings, grandparents and pets at a Hertfordshire newborn session

Older brothers and sisters are welcome, and their photographs with the baby are often the ones parents treasure most. We photograph siblings early in the session, while they still have patience, then let them play or head to nursery while the baby settles for the quieter set-ups. Grandparents can join for a few frames at the end.

Family pets can feature too, as long as they are calm and a second adult is on hand to look after them. Your baby and the pet are never left together unsupported, and any shot that pairs them is made with an adult holding one or the other. If the dog would rather be out, a walk on a nearby common, such as Croxley Common Moor or Harpenden Common, during the session is a sensible plan.

Before and after

Maternity before the birth, cake smash at the first birthday

You can book a maternity photoshoot at around 28 to 34 weeks, at home, at the studio or outdoors among the spring wisteria at Chorleywood House Estate. Booking maternity early also secures your place in the diary for the newborn session. For the full picture of newborn and baby work, see our baby photography page.

As your baby grows, a sitter session once your baby can sit and a cake smash photoshoot between about 11 and 13 months are popular follow-ons. A family session in a park such as Cassiobury or Verulamium is another, covered in our Hertfordshire family photography guide. Once the paperwork begins, remember that Hertfordshire County Council, not the district councils, handles birth registration for the whole county.

Planning

Planning around Hertfordshire

01

Get in touch before the birth

Send your due date during pregnancy so a window is held, then message once your baby arrives. That makes the 5 to 14 day timing much easier to meet.

02

Turn the heating up

Newborns need a warm room, so turn the heating up an hour or so before Kaushik arrives at your Hertfordshire home. It helps the session start calmly.

03

Choose your nearest window

A room with a large window, even a north-facing one, gives soft light. Clear a space about two metres square near it.

04

Studio by tube

Families in Rickmansworth and Chorleywood can reach the Northwood Hills studio on the Metropolitan line, two minutes' walk from the station.
