Natural family portraits in Chorleywood

Family sessions across Chorleywood and out to Heronsgate, Loudwater and Chalfont St Giles, usually on the common or in the Chorleywood House Estate grounds, and at the Northwood room through winter. Most groups booking here are two or three generations after one frame with everybody in it, plus whatever else the afternoon allows.

We choose the spot for the pram and the least mobile person present, not for the view, then work in a tight circle around it. Nobody crosses wet grass twice, the bags stay by the car, and the frame that matters is taken while the youngest is still interested rather than saved for the end.

Local and experienced

Experience that shows in Chorleywood

Plan on an hour. The group photograph is made at the start, since that frame is what the booking exists for, and everything after it can run at the children's pace.

We do not pose small children. They are given something to do and we photograph what follows. You get an edited gallery with the group frames at full size, and prints can be ordered from it later. If the weather is impossible we move indoors and the booking still stands.

Good to know

Family Photographer in Chorleywood, FAQs

Please do not fret, as this is entirely normal. We photograph babies in Chorleywood every week and are well used to tears, wriggling and surprise naps. We pause, calm your baby gently and carry on, so a rocky start seldom shows in the images.

Yes, and lots of Chorleywood families do. A first-year package follows your baby from their newborn session through sitting up and first steps, finishing with a cake smash on the first birthday. It is a lovely way to record just how fast they grow.

Do just get in touch as soon as you can. Babies and toddlers have their off days, and sudden illness happens, so we would always prefer to move things than capture an unhappy child. Together we will settle on a fresh date that works for you. Outdoors in Chorleywood we would head for Chorleywood House Estate grounds and the wooded grassland of Chorleywood Common.

Around an hour is typical for our Chorleywood sessions, but we honestly never watch the clock. When newborns and toddlers are involved we build in extra time for feeds, naps and cuddles, keeping everyone content. Your children set the pace, and we simply follow it.

Of course. Family photography is about everyone together, so parents are very much part of the session. We photograph the whole family, then smaller groups and each child alone, so you come away with cuddles, connection and every combination captured. Locally in Chorleywood that takes in Chorleywood Common, a 75 hectare Local Nature Reserve managed by the parish council.

Seventy five hectares of common is far more ground than a family session needs, and the useful part of that is choice near the edge rather than a long march into the middle. Grassland has no made surface across most of it, so a pram crosses grass, and grass after rain is what turns an afternoon out into an expedition. We pick a spot close to wherever you have parked and work in a circle around it: everyone together first, because that frame is the reason for the day, then the smaller groups, and the youngest alone at the end if there is anything left in them. Grandparents do better on that plan too, since tussocky ground is tiring underfoot and standing about waiting on it is harder than walking on it. The Chorleywood House Estate grounds are the alternative when the common is too wet or too exposed, with firmer going and more shelter. Small children give their best in the first twenty minutes and it falls away steeply after that, so nothing that matters is left until late. Winter is the point at which the Northwood room earns its keep. Grassland in December is either frozen or waterlogged, the light goes early, and a toddler wrapped up against the cold is a photograph of a coat. Indoors the light never changes, nobody is cold, and the session follows the child's mood instead of the sky. From March the common gives back what a room cannot: distance to run into, and pictures in which nobody has been arranged.
