Warm, relaxed family sessions in Rickmansworth

Family sessions run at the Aquadrome, across the grassland and the woodland walks between Batchworth and Bury Lakes, and Batchworth, Maple Cross and Mill End are reached just as easily. Most groups booking are a couple with small children, and a grandparent very often comes along for the walk as well.

We build the afternoon around whichever child runs out of patience first, rather than around a list of set pieces we have decided on in advance. The picture needing everybody gets taken early, then the session loosens off, because the second half is where the frames families keep tend to appear.

What we offer

Family photography in Rickmansworth

01

Toddlers & Children

Outdoor family sessions at the Aquadrome, planned around the youngest child rather than a shot list.

02

Canvases & Frames

Indoor sessions in the Northwood room for babies, hard weather, and anyone who cannot walk far.

03

Multi-Generation Groups

One gallery shared with the whole family, so grandparents get the pictures without asking for them.

Twenty-five years behind the lens

Reassuringly experienced with children

We meet at whichever gate you choose, hold the walking to a minimum, and photograph the group while it is occupied rather than while it is holding still. Nobody is asked to perform on command, and no child is bribed into it.

A session lasts about an hour, which is roughly the point at which a four year old stops cooperating. Everybody present gets the same gallery afterwards, so the pictures reach relatives without one person having to forward them all round.

Family Photographer in Rickmansworth, FAQs

Mostly. One arranged picture including the whole group is worth having and we take it early. After that the session is a walk between Batchworth and Bury Lakes with a camera alongside, and a nature reserve hands children something to look at that is not us. A child watching something real has an unguarded face, and that is where the keepers come from.

Yes. At The Broadway, 21 Joel St, Northwood HA6 the floor gets cleared before you arrive, so there is room to crawl about, and there is somewhere to feed and change a baby. It is the better option when the wind is up, because open grassland gives a small child nothing to stand behind. Toddlers give about twenty minutes of genuine interest indoors, so we work at that speed.

You can indeed. A popular option follows baby right through their first twelve months, starting with newborn photographs and moving through sitting up, first steps and a cake smash at one. Looking back on how quickly your little one changed is a real joy. Open air sessions near Rickmansworth can use Rickmansworth Aquadrome, with Batchworth and Bury Lakes, open grassland and woodland walks.

Yes, and normally in your own home in Rickmansworth instead of at the studio. Newborn sessions follow feeding and sleeping rather than a clock, so a long window gets set aside and a single warm room does all of it. There is nothing to carry anywhere. The Aquadrome becomes worth the trip later in the year, once the baby holds its own head up.

Think of it as a joyful first-birthday tradition. Your baby gets a cake all to themselves, and we photograph the wide-eyed anticipation, the mess and the pure delight. Plenty of Rickmansworth families book one, and it is easily among the most fun sessions we offer.

Small children photograph badly while being asked to look at a camera, and a nature reserve deals with that better than a mown lawn does, because a reserve is kept for what lives on it rather than for people standing about on it. There is nearly always something on the water or up in the trees to point at, and a child watching that has an unguarded face, which is the entire thing a family photograph is after. Two lakes help in a second way. Batchworth and Bury give the afternoon a direction, and a family heading somewhere behaves nothing like a family parked on a patch of grass and told to smile. The pictures worth having usually come out of the moving part. Length is set by the oldest person present far more often than by the youngest, which catches people out. Open grassland has nothing to lean on and no roof, so half an hour out there is plenty for a grandparent who has already walked in from the gate. The one picture that must include the whole group is therefore taken early, before anybody is cold, and the loose frames follow it. Wind ends a session on the reserve faster than rain does, since open grassland gives a small child nothing to stand behind, and a two year old in wind is finished before the camera is ready. The room at Northwood ignores the sky altogether, and for a baby too young to sit up it is the sensible choice whatever the forecast happens to say.
