Commercial photography in a town like this happens at addresses, not in a studio, and the room we are given decides the day more than the brief ever will. The one to offer is the emptiest, not the smartest: a run of blank wall, a couple of unobstructed paces before it, and a door that shuts properly. Boardrooms are usually the wrong answer, because the table cannot be moved and it holds everybody several feet from the wall behind them. Most offices are lit from a ceiling grid, and a face lit only from overhead gets dark eyes and a hard line beneath the nose. Where a window is also pushing light in from one end, the two disagree about colour and the skin is split between them. The answer in both cases is the same and it is not subtle: the ceiling goes off and the light gets built again from nothing, which costs about ten minutes and makes everything after it repeatable. Teams here are rarely all present on one day, and that is the real difficulty rather than the photography. Every measurement from the first visit is noted, so somebody photographed in November and somebody photographed in March still look like one afternoon of work. Interiors, and photographs of the work itself, cost far less time when they happen on the same visit as the faces, because the lighting is already standing and the building is already open.
