Saubhagyavati bhava, the whispered blessings from the married women of the family, is barely audible and over in seconds, so we position close and quiet before it begins rather than reacting. The jaimala can be full of laughter as friends lift you both, and we photograph the whole exchange fast enough to hold the surprise and the joy as the garlands go on.

During the vidaai we photograph the family gathered at the door, the rice, the last held hands and the goodbyes, treating the farewell with the tenderness it asks for. The mehndi evening moves at its own gentle pace, and we photograph the henna, the music and the anticipation building as the family counts down to the ceremony. Jaggo night is loud, late and full of decorated pots and dancing in the street, and the mix of darkness and lamplight makes it one of the more interesting evenings to shoot.
