The short answer

Where can I get graduation photos taken in Hertfordshire?

Kaushik Bathia photographs graduates at his Northwood Hills studio, a short drive from Watford, Bushey and Rickmansworth, or on location at a Hertfordshire landmark such as Verulamium Park or the castle grounds in Hertford. Bring your own cap, gown and hood if you have them, and the family too. Sessions cover formal and relaxed frames. Call or message 07956 505383 to arrange a date.

Our usual session area is within about 20 miles of the studio. Further out in Hertfordshire, sessions are by arrangement, with travel quoted in writing before you book.

Hatfield

Graduating from the University of Hertfordshire

The University of Hertfordshire is based in Hatfield, and its de Havilland Campus opened in September 2003 on the site of the former airfield. Hatfield is about 13.7 miles from the Northwood studio. For a graduate who has spent three or four years there, a portrait that nods to the town can mean more than a generic backdrop.

Nearby, St Etheldreda's Church overlooks Old Hatfield, and in south Hatfield, Howe Dell is a council woodland reserve of hornbeam, oak and beech in a steep stream valley. Stanborough Park in Welwyn Garden City, with its two lakes, is a few miles north. We do not organise ceremony-day photography with any university; on the day itself, check what your university allows.

Gown hire

Planning around the gown you hired

Hired gowns usually go back on the day of the ceremony, which leaves little time. If you want a proper portrait in the gown, either plan a slot before you return it or hire for an extra day if your supplier allows. If you own your gown, or have bought the hood, there is no rush: a session a week or a month later can be calmer, and the weather and the light can be chosen rather than taken as they come.

Whatever the timing, the gown and hood are arranged properly before every frame. If the gown is going to a Hertfordshire location rather than the studio, carry it on a hanger in the car and put it on at the spot, so it reaches Verulamium Park or the castle grounds in Hertford without creases. See the national graduation photos page for how a session runs.

On location

A medieval belfry in St Albans, a Norman motte in Hertford

Hertfordshire has landmarks with real weight behind a portrait. In St Albans, the Clock Tower in the Market Place, completed by 1405, is the only surviving medieval town belfry in England. Verulamium Park nearby covers 175 acres on the Roman city. In Hertford, at about 19.6 miles, the castle grounds hold a tree-covered Norman motte beside the River Lea and a stone curtain wall built by Henry II.

Letchworth's Howard Park and Gardens date from the creation of the world's first garden city over 100 years ago. In Welwyn Garden City, the Parkway runs for almost a mile through the town centre. Travel from Northwood is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book, so a location shoot in Letchworth, at about 27 miles, is costed clearly.

School leavers

Sixth-form and school leavers from Watford to Hitchin

Graduation is not only for university. Leaving school or sixth form is a milestone too, and a portrait in the uniform for the last time, or in the outfit for the leavers' event, marks it. These sessions work at home, in a local park or at the studio, and friends can be photographed together if their parents agree.

For leavers in the south-west of the county, the studio is close: Croxley Green is about 3.7 miles away and Abbots Langley 7.2. For a portrait outdoors, Cassiobury Park in Watford or Rothamsted Park in Harpenden, with its main avenue of mature limes, gives space and calm. Our portrait photographer in Watford and St Albans portrait pages cover location portraits in more detail.

Family

The people who helped you get there

A graduation portrait can be as much for the family as the graduate. The session starts with the graduate alone, in the classic formal frame, then moves to relaxed pictures and family groups: parents, grandparents, siblings. If grandparents are travelling into Hertfordshire for the ceremony, a studio date the next day can include them without the crowds.

A framed print makes a good thank-you for the people who helped. Prints, frames and albums are available to order from the gallery, and prices for the session itself are given on request by phone or WhatsApp. The graduation photography guide has more planning tips, and the Hertfordshire hub lists every service.

Planning

Planning around Hertfordshire

01

Hatfield graduates

Hatfield is about 13.7 miles from the studio. Old Hatfield, St Etheldreda's and Howe Dell give a location portrait a link to your university town.

02

St Albans Clock Tower

The only surviving medieval town belfry in England stands in the St Albans Market Place, about 10.9 miles from Northwood.

03

Gown back the same day

A hired gown normally has to be returned on the day of the ceremony. Book a slot before it goes back, or plan a later Hertfordshire session if you own your gown.

04

Leavers in the south-west

From Watford, Bushey or Rickmansworth the studio is under four miles away, so a leavers' portrait fits around exams and part-time shifts.
