Studio and on-location portraits in Sarratt

We photograph portraits in Sarratt and out through the surrounding villages, taking Kings Langley, Bovingdon and Flaunden on identical terms. Most bookings here are one person or a couple, made outdoors on the green or beside the water at Sarratt Bottom. Weather sends us indoors to the Northwood room, a fallback rather than the usual arrangement, and one worth naming when you first get in touch.

One choice is best made in advance, which is whether the picture should say Sarratt or simply be a good likeness of you. The first answer sends us to the church and the valley. The second is better served by something plain. Same session either way, so we only need telling which.

What we offer

Portrait photography in Sarratt

01

Model Portfolios

Portraits made on the long village green, down in the Chess Valley, or dry indoors when Sarratt turns wet.

02

Couple Portraits

One background chosen and then worked properly, instead of a tour of six spots all left half used.

03

On-Location Portraits

Retouched by hand, then delivered through a private gallery at sizes that print and sizes that post.

Why choose us

Reassuringly experienced portrait photography

Each sitting begins with a short walk and a look at two or three spots, then commits to one and works it properly instead of collecting locations. Everything is visible on a laptop throughout, so a top or an angle can be changed at the point where changing it still helps.

You then pick from a private gallery and your choices are retouched by hand. Skin stays skin. A temporary blemish or a loose hair goes, and the structure of the face is left alone.

Good to know

Portrait Photographer in Sarratt, FAQs

Yes. Alongside your digital images from your Sarratt sitting, we offer fine prints, framed portraits, canvases and hand-finished albums, all made to a high standard. A framed portrait on the wall, or an album in your hands, is a lovely way to enjoy the images for years.

Because the plan gets settled before we arrive. In Sarratt that normally means the long green, framed along its length instead of across it, with you standing several paces clear of any wall so flint and brick soften into one even tone. If the sun is high and hard we drop into the Chess Valley, where the sides of the valley do the shading for us. Very little is left to luck.

Yes. Sittings happen along the green, beside the flint and brick church, or on the valley floor at Sarratt Bottom, with an indoor fallback at Northwood for the days when outdoors is pointless. Let us know at booking whether you want Sarratt recognisable in the frame or just a clean background behind you, because the two answers send us to opposite ends of the village.

We do, but with a gentle touch. Passing distractions such as a stray hair or a small blemish are eased away, yet your skin, lines and character stay exactly as they are. We aim for a flattering, true-to-life portrait, never a heavily edited or artificial one. Locally in Sarratt that takes in The Church of the Holy Cross, a flint and brick church founded around 1190.

Absolutely, and we encourage it. Several outfit changes add lovely variety to your portraits, and the session always allows time for them. Ask us in advance and we will gladly suggest what works best, and how various colours and styles look under our professional lighting. Open air sessions near Sarratt can use The Chess Valley and Sarratt Bottom, a chalk stream landscape in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Our studio is in Northwood, so Sarratt (WD3) is part of our core Hertfordshire area. It sits close to Maple Cross and Chorleywood, which we cover too. Sessions run at the studio or on location in Sarratt, and there is no travel charge for local bookings.

Sarratt is a pretty Chilterns village in the Three Rivers district, clustered along a long narrow historic green about four miles north of Rickmansworth. Sarratt is served by nearby Chorleywood and Rickmansworth stations on the Metropolitan line, and lies close to junction 18 of the M25. For on-location sessions we often head to spots such as The Chess Valley and Sarratt Bottom, close to the well-known The Church of the Holy Cross.

Sarratt is built along one long narrow green, and that shape settles more about a sitting here than the forecast does. A green running in a line offers one usable axis: aim along its length and the trees and the buildings lining it stack up behind the sitter as receding layers of tone; aim across it and you get the far edge of the strip flat and close. So the first decision is which way the camera points, and once taken it is kept. The Church of the Holy Cross supplies the other dependable background, though not at close range. Flint set in brick and mortar is a busy surface up close, dark glassy nodules against pale joints, and two paces behind a head it pulls the eye off where it should be. Move the sitter five or six paces clear of the wall and the flecking blurs into a single even mid tone, which is what a background is for. It settles clothing at the same time: something distinctly paler or distinctly deeper than that wall keeps a person separate, while anything in the same brown grey band sinks into it. Sarratt Bottom behaves in reverse. It is valley floor, so it loses direct sun while the green above still holds it, and the gap is close to an hour at each end of a day. The consequence is a schedule most people would guess backwards: the valley in the hours either side of noon, when overhead sun is a nuisance up on the open green, and the green itself first thing and last.
