Cassiobury Park gives a Watford portrait two kinds of water, and they are not interchangeable. The canal runs straight, so placing a sitter along the towpath sets up a hard line travelling away behind them and the frame gains depth without a lamp being touched. The Gade bends, and the planting along its banks closes in around a figure, which suits somebody who would rather be held inside a picture than posted in front of a view. Settling that question at the gate saves more of the hour than any other choice made on the day. The second fact about this park is that a great many people are crossing it to get somewhere rather than visiting it. A sitting held on the main routes is a sitting watched by whoever happens to be walking, and hardly anybody carries themselves well with strangers passing behind the lens. Step off those routes and the ground empties, and the change in posture that follows outweighs any adjustment we could make to the light. Weekday mornings are emptier again, which is the thing to ask for if being looked at is what you dread. Anyone who wants no green at all can have the town centre instead, where brick, glass and hard shade will carry a whole sitting on their own. Wear fabric that hangs heavily, since thin cloth lifts in the open ground by the water and photographs as untidy. Should the sky close over, Watford station and the Northwood studio share the Metropolitan line.
