Oxhey Park gives a riverside sitting one thing an open field cannot: a background that sits lower than your eye line. The Colne runs below the level of the path, so a few steps back from the bank fills the frame with the far side rather than with sky, and a face no longer competes with a bright ceiling of cloud. Season swings this hard. Through summer the far bank is a continuous wall of green, dark and even, and almost any mid-tone shirt lifts away from it cleanly. Once the leaves go, that same background turns pale, busy and full of branch detail, and it starts competing with the head. Winter sittings therefore move closer to the water and use the surface of the river as the quiet area behind the shoulders. What you wear follows from that. Green and khaki vanish into the summer bank, and a fine pattern breaks up at any distance. Plain mid-blue, warm oatmeal or a deep red hold their shape in both seasons. Black beside a river on a grey day goes to a shape with no detail in it. Oxhey Chapel, listed and standing since 1612, is the built alternative when the ground beside the river is too soft to work. Old walls read as texture rather than as pattern, which is a kinder background for an older face, though access to private ground is a question to settle well before the day.
