Belgrave Road

The Golden Mile: saris, jewellery and the weeks before the mandap

In Leicester, the preparations for a Hindu wedding can begin on Belgrave Road long before the first puja. The Golden Mile is known for its Indian restaurants, sari shops and jewellers, and it is a place where outfits can be chosen, fitted and collected. It is also famous for its winter illuminations and for Diwali celebrations described as the largest outside India, so a wedding in late autumn shares the road with the festival crowds.

If you would like the preparations in the album, a short session during a final fitting or a jewellery collection can show the wedding in its city. Ask the shop first whether it is happy to be included. These pictures sit well beside the formal portraits, because they show the people and the streets behind the day.

At the 2021 census, 43.4 per cent of Leicester's population identified as Asian. For a Hindu wedding here, the guest list for the sangeet can be as large as the one for the wedding itself, so ask the hall about capacity for both nights.

At home

Ganesh puja, pithi and mehndi in a Leicester front room

The Ganesh puja that opens the wedding can be held at home, with the pandit, the parents and the closest family. It is quiet, sometimes early, and full of small details: the thali, the diya, the hands of grandparents giving blessings. Kaushik works from the edge of the room and moves only when the pandit pauses.

The pithi or haldi comes next, and it is the opposite: loud, crowded and yellow with turmeric. We suggest clothes nobody minds ruining, and a corner of the garden if the weather allows. The mehndi can follow the same evening or the next, with the henna artist and a long night of music.

These home events are close together in time, and in Leicester the two family homes may be a short drive apart. Send us both addresses early. If both families hold their pithi at the same hour, a second photographer can cover the other family's preparations at the same time.

The ceremony

Jaimala, kanyadaan and the pheras: how the mandap is photographed

Under the mandap, the order of the rituals decides where Kaushik stands, and in Leicester as anywhere that order varies by family and pandit, so we go through yours beforehand. The jaimala, when the families sometimes lift the couple so the garlands are hard to reach, the kanyadaan, the hastamelap and the pheras around the sacred fire each need a different position. In many Gujarati weddings the couple takes the saptapadi, the seven steps, as a rite of its own after the pheras.

We ask for the pandit's running order and the muhurat time before the day. With that, Kaushik can choose positions in advance for the sindoor, the mangalsutra and the blessings from the elders, and avoid crossing the mandap while the ritual is under way.

Your temple or hall may have its own guidance on where photographers stand. Ask when you book, send it to us, and we follow it. For more on each ritual, the national Hindu weddings page walks through each rite.

The civil part

Leicester Town Hall's no-photography rule and the re-staged signing

A Hindu ceremony at a hall or temple is not usually a legal marriage on its own, so a civil ceremony is normally added, which can be held at the register office in Leicester Town Hall, entered from Town Hall Square. Plan for the Town Hall's rule: no photographs are allowed during the ceremony itself.

What you can have is a registrar re-staging the signing once the ceremony is over, and, for couples in the Oak Room or the Fountain Room, the use of a separate photographic room. We plan those minutes in advance so the family groups are ready and nobody wanders off before the pictures.

In Charnwood, notice of marriage can still be given at the Loughborough Registration Office on Beaumanor Drive, even though its Railton Room is no longer taking new ceremony bookings.

Between events

Abbey Park's lavender maze and Victoria Park's Arch for portraits

Leicester has two parks close to the centre that suit a short portrait session in wedding clothes. Abbey Park, just north of the centre, has formal gardens, a lavender maze, a lake and riverside walks in the grounds of the medieval St Mary's Abbey. Victoria Park, the city's former racecourse, has 69 acres of open space, tree-lined paths and the War Memorial Arch.

A Hindu wedding day is long, and a twenty-minute stop on the way to the reception may be all there is time for. We agree the park and the route in advance, so the couple can step out of the car, take the portraits and be back on the road without keeping the guests waiting.

Towns and travel

Leicester, Loughborough and the trip from Northwood

Leicester is about 78 miles from our Northwood studio and Loughborough about 88. Travel from Northwood is quoted up front and set out in writing before you book, with each event on its own line. For a single-day wedding with a late-morning muhurat, a day trip may work; for a puja, sangeet and wedding on three days, an overnight stay is usually the more sensible plan.

Planning

Planning around Leicestershire

01

Book around the festival season

Belgrave Road's Diwali celebrations and winter illuminations draw large crowds, so allow extra time for a late-autumn wedding near the Golden Mile.

02

Send the muhurat time

The pandit's muhurat fixes the whole day. Once we have it, we plan the arrival for the puja and the drive from Northwood around it.

03

Plan the Town Hall signing

No photographs during a Town Hall ceremony, so build the re-staged signing and the photographic room into the timeline straight afterwards.

04

Dress for the pithi

Turmeric stains. Choose clothes for the pithi that nobody minds losing, and hold it outside if the garden and the weather allow.

05

Portraits in Abbey Park

The lavender maze, lake and abbey grounds sit just north of the city centre, an easy stop between the mandap and the reception.

Good to know

Hindu weddings in Leicestershire: questions answered

Yes, if the shops are happy to be included. A short session during a sari fitting or a jewellery collection on Belgrave Road shows the preparations in the city they belong to. Tell us the dates, and we fit it around the puja and the mehndi.

Yes. Gujarati pithi, mandvo, garba, dandiya and the saptapadi after the pheras are all part of the coverage. Leicester is about 78 miles from Northwood, and each event is listed in your quote with its hours, so you can choose which ones to include.

It depends on the timings. A single day with a late-morning muhurat may work from Northwood. With a puja, sangeet and wedding on consecutive days, an overnight stay is usually sensible at this distance, and it is shown in your written quote before you book.

Not during the ceremony itself. The registrar can re-stage the signing afterwards, and couples in the Oak Room or the Fountain Room can use a separate photographic room. We plan the family groups for those minutes so the civil wedding is still well recorded.

Coverage for a Hindu wedding in Leicestershire starts from £750. Packages are built around your rituals, so the price depends on the events, the hours and any extras such as a second photographer or a hand-finished album. Travel sits in the same written quote.

Yes. At the 2021 census 15.7 per cent of Loughborough residents identified as Asian or Asian British. Loughborough is about 88 miles from Northwood, and Queen's Park, with the Carillon and bandstand, is a town-centre option for portraits.

Abbey Park, with its lavender maze, lake and abbey ruins, and Victoria Park, with the War Memorial Arch and tree-lined paths, are both close to the centre. We agree the park and the timing with you before the day.
