Planning from a distance

A Leicestershire anand karaj, 78 miles from Northwood

An anand karaj is traditionally held in the morning, and that is the first thing to plan for a Leicestershire wedding. Leicester is about 78 miles from our studio on Joel Street, and Loughborough about 88. With the baraat gathering early and the milni outside the gurdwara before the ceremony, an overnight stay the night before is usually the sensible choice, and it is set out in your written quote.

We ask for three times: when the baraat leaves, when the gurdwara needs everyone seated, and when the hall must be cleared after the langar. Those three times shape the whole day, from the sehra bandi to the reception.

Guests travelling from the south can use the Midland Main Line, which serves both Leicester and Loughborough from London St Pancras. That makes a morning ceremony easier for relatives coming up for the day.

Inside the gurdwara

Milni, laavan and ardas in a Leicester or Loughborough gurdwara

The milni happens outside first, with elders from both families exchanging garlands and embraces. Kaushik positions himself to see the faces of both families rather than standing in the path between them, then follows everyone in with his head covered and shoes off.

Once inside the darbar hall, the couple take their places before the Guru Granth Sahib. After the ardas, the four laavan are read, and the couple walks around the Guru Granth Sahib once for each verse. Kaushik stays in the place the gurdwara has given photographers, works quietly and keeps the camera down whenever the committee has asked for that.

Every gurdwara sets its own guidance, so please ask yours when you book and send it to us. If the gurdwara is in Loughborough, about ten miles further from Northwood than Leicester, or the baraat sets out from a home in Charnwood, tell us that too, because it moves the arrival time for the milni.

Before the wedding

Maiyan, jaggo and choora at Leicestershire homes

The celebrations at home start days earlier. The maiyan brings turmeric paste and a lot of laughter, sometimes in a crowded front room. The jaggo night follows, with decorated pots of lamps carried through the house and out into the street. The choora, with the red and ivory bangles, and the kalire can come on the wedding morning or the evening before.

In Leicestershire, the two family homes might both be in the city, or one in Leicester and one out in Charnwood. Tell us each address. If both maiyan happen at the same hour, a second photographer can cover the other family's preparations at the same time, as an optional extra.

Home events are lively and close, and the best photographs come from working with the family rather than directing it. Kaushik stays near the action and lets the evening run its course.

Legal marriage

Is the anand karaj your legal wedding? Notice in Leicester and Charnwood

Whether the anand karaj is legally binding depends on whether your gurdwara is registered for marriages and has an authorised person present. Ask the committee early. If it is not, you will also need a civil ceremony, and in the city that can be the register office at Leicester Town Hall.

The Town Hall does not allow photographs during the ceremony, but a registrar can re-stage the signing afterwards, and the Oak Room and Fountain Room have the use of a separate photographic room. In Charnwood, notice of marriage can still be given at the Loughborough Registration Office on Beaumanor Drive.

If the civil ceremony is on a different day, Kaushik can photograph it as a short booking, quoted with its own travel line.

Portraits

Queen's Park and the Carillon, or Victoria Park's War Memorial Arch

After the langar there can be a gap before the reception, and it is the natural time for couple portraits. In Loughborough, Queen's Park opened in 1899 for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee and holds the Carillon, a Grade II listed war memorial completed in 1923, along with a bandstand and Charnwood Museum. Its 47 bells were all cast at the Taylor foundry in the town.

In Leicester, Victoria Park, the former racecourse close to the centre, has the War Memorial Arch, the Peace Walk and tree-lined paths across 69 acres. Abbey Park has gardens, a lake and the ruins of St Mary's Abbey. We choose the park by where the gurdwara and the reception are, so the portrait stop does not add a long detour.

Reception and doli

The reception, the doli and where to read next

At the reception, the entrance, the speeches, the cake and the bhangra each need space. Ask the venue where the stage and the dance floor will be, and agree the order of family groups for the stage with both families before the night. The doli closes the day with the farewell, a quiet moment that needs little more than a clear path.

Planning

Planning around Leicestershire

01

Ask the gurdwara early

Each gurdwara sets its own photography guidance for the darbar hall and the langar. Ask when you book the date and pass it on to us.

02

Plan for the early start

An anand karaj usually starts in the morning, so with Leicester about 78 miles away, an overnight stay is often sensible and set out in your written quote.

03

Check the legal position

If your gurdwara is not registered for marriages, book a civil ceremony too, at Leicester Town Hall or another register office.

04

Portraits by the Carillon

Queen's Park in Loughborough has the 1923 Carillon war memorial and a bandstand, a short walk from the town centre.
