The milni, the kirtan and the four laavan
Inside a darbar hall everyone is down at carpet height, which puts every eye line far under where a standing photographer normally works. Keep your feet and you collect the tops of heads for an hour. We go down early and remain there, on the understanding that shifting position while kirtan is being sung buys nothing worth having. Whatever lighting exists in that hall is all there is; we add none of our own.
The four laavan run as four passages closing on one repeated movement, so the danger is four pictures that look identical; we vary our height and our glass between them, never our footing. Milni sits earlier, outdoors, with everybody upright and moving, which is the one stretch we can circle freely. Then the hired room, where control returns and the whole rhythm has to be re-read before the first course lands. Two buildings, one afternoon, and almost no method in common.
