We treat the darbar hall as the sacred space it is, covered, barefoot and unobtrusive, and couples tell us afterwards they barely knew we were there. The moment the fourth laav is completed and the flower petals rain down, we are ready for it, photographing the shower, the smiles and the congregation calling out in joy. Kirtan by the ragis fills the hall long before you enter it, and we arrive in time to photograph the musicians settling, the harmonium opening and the sangat gathering in ones and twos.
Sithniyan sung by the bride's side are teasing, funny and completely untranslatable, and we photograph the aunties delivering them and the groom's family taking it in good humour. Turban tying before the baraat is done seriously and slowly, often by an uncle who has done it a hundred times, and we photograph the concentration as well as the finished pagri. At the reception we photograph the entrance as a highlight, the announcement, the walk in and the cheer as you arrive to bhangra with everyone you love.
