Sikh weddings start early, and that single fact reorganises everything downstream. Portraits land in the stretch of morning when sunlight arrives low, hard and from one side only. Relatives who travelled overnight turn up tired and photograph beautifully anyway. By the hour a guest at some other wedding would be sitting down to lunch, the ceremonial half of your Leicester day is over and the second half has yet to open. Kirtan and laavan at carpet height

Inside a darbar hall everyone is down at carpet height, which puts every eye line far under where a standing photographer normally works. Keep your feet and you collect the tops of heads for an hour. We go down early and remain there, on the understanding that shifting position while kirtan is being sung buys nothing worth having. Whatever lighting exists in that hall is all there is; we add none of our own.

The four laavan run as four passages closing on one repeated movement, so the danger is four pictures that look identical; we vary our height and our glass between them, never our footing. Milni sits earlier, outdoors, with everybody upright and moving, which is the one stretch we can circle freely. Then the hired room, where control returns and the whole rhythm has to be re-read before the first course lands. Two buildings, one afternoon, and almost no method in common.

A Leicester day could run from the gurdwara to a reception room such as Winstanley House, which seats up to 450 for dinner with in-house Asian catering, with Abbey Park just north of the centre for portraits by the lake and lavender maze in between. Leicester's register office is at the Town Hall, entered from Town Hall Square; photos are not allowed during the ceremony itself, but a registrar can re-stage the signing afterwards, and the Oak and Fountain rooms have a separate photographic room. We travel from Northwood; travel and any overnight stay are quoted in writing before you book.

Are you able to work without flash near the Guru Granth Sahib?+

Yes. Through that stretch we use only the light already installed, wide open and at a raised sensitivity, with a little grain accepted as the price. Nothing of ours fires, nothing is put on a stand, and we stay low from beginning to end.

What happens if the ceremony at the gurdwara runs longer than expected?+

Nothing changes. Ceremonies at the gurdwara drift, and the drift should be absorbed by the portrait window later, never by the ceremony itself. We would sooner compress a couple session in Leicester than walk out of a hall before things finish.
