Long lenses do much of the quiet work, so in a room as full as the Oak Room we can photograph a grandparent's face from across the floor without anyone noticing. Leicester's register office is at the Town Hall, entered from Town Hall Square, with the Oak Room holding 80 and the Fountain Room 40, while Leicester Cathedral on Peacock Lane holds Church of England weddings, and we photograph civil, church and multicultural days alike. Leicester Town Hall does not allow photographs during the ceremony itself, but a registrar can re-stage the signing afterwards and couples in the Oak or Fountain rooms can use a separate photographic room, so we plan those minutes carefully.
Few English cities carry a South Asian wedding as naturally as this one, where the Golden Mile along Belgrave Road and the major Diwali celebrations set the visual register. Days here often run to two or three distinct events, so the plan matters more than the kit, and a second photographer can be booked when two of them overlap. Abbey Park, the Victorian park on the River Soar near the city centre, is the green relief between ceremony and reception. Leicester Cathedral, reburial place of King Richard III, offers stonework that suits a restrained architectural treatment. Winstanley House, Devonshire Place and St Martins House each need their own lighting approach rather than a single default. The Midland Main Line runs direct to London St Pancras, the M1 and M69 bring the rest, and local families travel in from Wigston, Aylestone and Braunstone.

The marriage itself occupies only a sliver of the day. The vows fill a small slot inside a room somebody licensed for the purpose, and licensing says nothing whatever about whether a room photographs well. Ours is the awkward job of making that room resemble the one you imagined while altering nothing about it. Doable, but only by knowing in advance which direction its light arrives from. Stand in there yourself, at the right hour, on any spare weekday.
Then there is the person conducting it, who is not supplied by the venue and whose preferences appear on no brochure. One of them lets a camera roam, while another draws a line and expects it kept. Neither position is unreasonable, and neither is guessable without a direct question. Put that question in writing when you confirm your date, and pass whatever comes back to us. It costs one email and settles the argument.

A church, a hotel room holding a licence and a register office are three different exposures rather than three different moods. Stone interiors run dark and their windows were placed for worship, so you get strong light down one flank and almost nothing along the other. Hotel rooms are evenly lit and evenly dull, which means interest has to be built rather than found. Register offices are small, putting everyone close and removing any option of standing back.
Group photographs fail through administration, not through photography. Draft the list weeks out. Trim it to the combinations that will actually be printed. Appoint a relative from both families who recognises everyone listed and is not embarrassed about calling out. Without those three, the exercise doubles in length and swallows precisely the stretch of evening when the light outside is worth using. One short conversation weeks earlier buys most of that back.

Yes. Until a booking fee has been paid the date stays open and somebody else can take it, which is less a sales tactic than the only workable rule. What the fee covers, and when the balance falls due, is written down.
More than most schedules give the groups, and less than most couples imagine for portraits of themselves. Half an hour of couple pictures is ample. Groups overrun; a shorter list solves that better than a longer slot ever will.
