Which one it is varies between households, and the variation is structural rather than decorative: it moves where the authority in a room sits, it decides who may stand near it, and it settles whether we work from the carpet or from our feet. We ask that question first. Everything afterwards is scheduling.

Stamina sounds like a soft consideration and is not. By the third event a family is tired, anyone photographing them is tired, and tired photographers make timid pictures. We shape the week so the heavy coverage lands where you want it rather than where our energy happens to hold out, which means agreeing early which events get everything and which get an hour. Saying that aloud beats any equipment decision. Nobody looks their best on the last afternoon by accident.

Have you worked with dhol players, DJs and other suppliers before?+

Constantly. The practical bit is agreeing sightlines before an entrance, because a dhol player, a video crew and a stills photographer all want the same patch of doorway. A few seconds of conversation beforehand keeps all three from wandering into one another's shots.

Will you photograph the vidaai or bride's farewell?+

Yes. It is usually the hardest thing of the day to do well, being genuinely private and often happening beside a car. Distance does the work; the lens closes the gap so we do not have to. We take nothing a family would rather not keep.

How do you keep up with such a fast, packed wedding day?+

By having the order in our heads beforehand, and by refusing to chase. Anyone running around a wedding is permanently a step behind it. Being early to the right spot works better, which needs a schedule from you and homework from us.

Do you photograph the reception and the entertainment afterwards?+

Yes. Stage lighting after dark belongs to somebody else's design and changes colour on a timer, so we meter for it rather than fight it, putting up light ourselves only where a face would otherwise vanish.

Can you photograph both the ladies' mehndi and the following ceremony?+

Yes, and running the two together beats splitting them. A mehndi evening is where a family unwinds, and it shows; carrying the mood into the next day gives a finished set its beginning rather than a cold open.
