…Kaushik is incredibly talented, artistic, and truly gifted with a photographer’s vision. He knows exactly what he wants each frame to look like and how to get the best out of his subjects. Honestly, there were moments during the shoot when I’d wonder, “What is he making me do?” – but when I saw the final shots, I was blown away. Every image looked beautiful, intentional, and natural.

Would 100% recommend Kaushik Bathia Photography! Kaushik and his team photographed all my wedding functions and I couldn't be happier with the results. He listened to us, got to know our family and close one's and captured all the special moments. We had a great mixture of romantic portraits and natural candid photos of the ceremony. Thank you so much for the most beautiful, treasured wedding photos!

Why Leicester

Leicester's Asian wedding scene, in figures

At the 2021 census, 43.4% of Leicester's population identified as Asian. Very few cities in Britain come close to that, and it shows in the shape of a wedding here: guest lists are often large, families are close by, and the preparation can run for most of a week. Couples who grew up in the city usually know exactly which suppliers they want, and the photographer has to fit into a plan that already has momentum.

Loughborough has its own community too. At the same census, 10,191 Loughborough residents, or 15.7% of the town, identified as Asian or Asian British. So an Asian wedding in Leicestershire may move between Charnwood and the city, with a haldi at a family home in one and a reception in the other.

The Golden Mile on Belgrave Road is where much of the shopping for a wedding happens, known for its Indian restaurants, sari shops and jewellers. It is also famous for its winter illuminations and for Diwali celebrations described as the largest outside India. A pre-wedding shoot there, or a few candid frames of the final outfit fitting, can say a lot about where the couple comes from.

Day by day

Planning a multi-day Asian wedding 78 miles from the studio

A Leicester Asian wedding can mean a mehndi on Thursday, a sangeet on Friday, the ceremony on Saturday and a reception that evening or on Sunday. From Northwood, that is a lot of travelling. We plan it event by event: which days need full coverage, which need a shorter visit, and whether it is more sensible for Kaushik to stay in Leicestershire for two or three nights than to drive back and forth.

Each option is costed openly. Travel from Northwood and any overnight stays are quoted up front and set out in writing before you book, so the family can compare it fairly. Some couples choose full coverage of every event; others keep the home rituals for a relative with a good camera and book Kaushik for the ceremony and reception. Both work, and we will say which we would choose for your schedule.

For the ceremony day, we ask for a running order from the family priest, granthi or imam well in advance. Rituals overrun, and in a city where the reception may be across town, knowing which moments cannot be missed lets us plan where to stand rather than chase.

Ceremonies

Hindu, Gujarati, Sikh and Muslim weddings in the county

For a Hindu or Gujarati wedding, the haldi often happens at home, with close family and a lot of turmeric, followed by the ceremony under the mandap with the pheras around the sacred fire. Home rituals are close quarters: small rooms, mixed light and many relatives wanting to help. We work quietly, so the house does not feel like a set. More about the ceremony itself is on our Hindu weddings page.

A Sikh wedding centres on the anand karaj at the gurdwara, with the four laavan around the Guru Granth Sahib. Inside the gurdwara, heads are covered and shoes removed, and the photographer keeps to the side during the laavan rather than moving across the hall. The milni and the doli bring the energy back outside. See our Sikh weddings guide for how we approach the day.

For Muslim weddings, the nikah may be held at home or at a mosque, with the walima afterwards and a mehndi beforehand. Photography stays respectful and quiet, especially during prayers, and we agree with the family in advance what should and should not be photographed. Our Muslim weddings page sets out how that works.

Big guest lists

Receptions for hundreds of guests

Leicester has dedicated ballroom venues that host Asian wedding receptions with in-house Asian catering, and at that scale the photography changes. A room of several hundred guests means stage photographs with each branch of the family, entrances that happen once and fast, and a dance floor that can be hard to read from the edge. We agree the stage list with the family beforehand, so nobody important is left off because the queue ran long.

Lighting in large halls is usually dramatic and coloured, which looks wonderful in person and difficult on camera. Kaushik works with that rather than against it, adding light where faces need it and keeping the colour of the room where it adds atmosphere.

A second photographer is worth considering for a large reception. One can stay with the couple on stage while the other covers guests, speeches and the family tables. It is an optional extra, priced in your bespoke package.

Civil plus religious

Fitting the legal ceremony into the plan

You can hold a civil ceremony at the Town Hall in Leicester as well as your religious one. Remember that the Town Hall does not allow photographs during the ceremony itself, though the registrar can re-stage the signing and couples in the Oak Room or the Fountain Room can use a separate photographic room. If the civil wedding is a small family affair a week or two earlier, we can cover it as its own shorter booking.

Couples in Charnwood can give notice of marriage at the Loughborough Registration Office on Beaumanor Drive, which is no longer taking new ceremony bookings for its Railton Room. Notice there, a civil ceremony in the city and a religious ceremony at the family's temple, gurdwara or mosque is a common shape, and each part needs its own slot in the plan.

Further out, some country estates in the Wolds offer cultural weddings by name and are hired exclusively. Ask the venue directly what it allows for fire ceremonies, catering and late finishes before you commit.

Planning

Planning around Leicestershire

01

Map out each event

List every function with its date, place and start time. With Leicester about 78 miles from Northwood, the plan decides whether an overnight stay makes sense.

02

Set the stage list

Agree which family groups go on stage, and in what order, before the reception. It keeps the photographs complete when the room holds hundreds.

03

Use the Midland Main Line

Leicester and Loughborough are both on the Midland Main Line, so guests coming from London St Pancras can reach either town by train for the ceremony days.

04

Shop on the Golden Mile

A short pre-wedding shoot among Belgrave Road's jewellers and sari shops can show the preparations in context, if the shops are happy to be included.

05

Civil ceremony on another day

If the Town Hall ceremony is on a separate date, it can be photographed as a shorter booking with its own written quote.

Good to know

Asian weddings in Leicestershire: questions answered

We plan them day by day. You tell us each event, and we propose which ones need full coverage. Because Leicester is about 78 miles from Northwood, the written quote compares driving back each night with staying locally, so the family can choose.

Yes. Gujarati weddings, from the haldi and mehndi to the pheras and reception, are among the traditions Kaushik photographs. A short pre-wedding shoot among the sari shops and jewellers of Belgrave Road can show the preparations in context, if the shops are happy to be included.

Coverage starts from £750, but a multi-day Asian wedding is quoted as a bespoke package. It depends on the number of events, the hours, a second photographer and an album. Travel and any overnight stays are set out in the same written quote.

Yes, with the gurdwara's permission. Loughborough is about 88 miles from Northwood, and 15.7 per cent of its residents identified as Asian or Asian British in 2021. Tell us your gurdwara and the committee's guidance for the laavan, and see our Sikh weddings in Loughborough page.

Yes. A nikah at home or at a mosque, a mehndi beforehand and the walima afterwards are all covered, with quiet, modest coverage during prayers. Tell us your mosque and any photography guidance it gives. Our Muslim weddings in Leicester page has more on the city.

Photographs are not allowed during the ceremony itself, but the registrar can re-stage the signing, and couples in the Oak Room or the Fountain Room can use a separate photographic room. We plan around both so you still have pictures from the day.

It is a cost, not a barrier. Weddings travel across the UK, and on the main days of a large Leicestershire wedding an overnight stay is usually sensible at this distance and is set out in your written quote, so you can weigh it before deciding.

Yes. Leicester station is on the Midland Main Line about 99 miles from London St Pancras, and Loughborough is on the same line. That helps guests coming up for one day of the celebration, and Kaushik's own travel is quoted in writing before you book.
