A long way, planned properly

Why a north-east Asian wedding is planned as one trip

An Asian wedding is rarely one event. There may be a mehndi or sangeet in the evening, a haldi or maiyan the next morning, the religious ceremony and then a reception. At around 232 to 238 miles from Northwood, travelling back between those days would make no sense, so we plan the whole run of events as one trip north.

Send us your programme with dates, times and addresses. We then build a quote that prices each day separately and lists the travel from Northwood and any nights of accommodation, so you can see what three or four days of coverage involve and trim where you want to.

That approach also helps families. With one photographer present from the first event to the last, the pictures follow a single style across the whole celebration.

Where ceremonies take place

Homes, places of worship, civic rooms and hotels

Tell us the mandir, gurdwara or mosque for your religious ceremony and any photography guidance it gives, and we plan around it. Kaushik then works out where to stand, when to stay still and how to cover the key moments without getting in the way.

Home events, such as a mehndi in the front room or a haldi in the garden, are planned with the same care. They are often small and close, so a quiet, unhurried approach matters most.

Receptions are usually at a hotel or a large hall. Sunderland's approved list includes seafront hotels at Roker and Seaburn and converted historic buildings, and Newcastle's includes city hotels and large event spaces.

The legal ceremony

Adding a civil ceremony in Newcastle or Sunderland

You can register the marriage separately, a few days before or on the morning of the main celebration. Newcastle Register Office on the second floor of the Civic Centre has rooms for two witnesses, for 12 and for up to 50, and Sunderland City Hall has four ceremony rooms including the Mayor's Parlour with its roof-top terrace.

A small civil ceremony makes a calm start to a busy set of days, and it gives you a formal set of photographs with your closest family. If it falls on a separate day, we add it to the written quote as its own short session.

Guests and logistics

King's Cross to Newcastle, and groups on a long reception night

Families coming up from London and the Midlands will be travelling too. Newcastle station has East Coast Main Line trains to London King's Cross, and Sunderland has Grand Central trains via York, with the Metro linking the two cities. Holding the main events on consecutive days means guests make one trip.

Group photographs at a big north-east reception go faster when the list is settled before the day and the largest groups go first. Tell us where the stage and the entrance are, and when the speeches fall, so Kaushik is in position before the couple comes in.

An optional second photographer can cover the other family's preparations at the same time, and adds a second angle at the entrance and the ceremony.

Portraits in outfits

Couple portraits between events in Tyne and Wear

Bridal outfits need space and good light. In Newcastle, Exhibition Park has a lake with swans and wide lawns, and Jesmond Dene's waterfalls and woodland give a softer setting. Grey Street's stone facades suit a city look, and the Tyne Bridge gives the classic Newcastle backdrop.

In Sunderland, Barnes Park reopened after an 18-month restoration with new bridges over its stream and lake, and Mowbray Park's Winter Gardens offer a warm, covered setting under a 30-metre rotunda. Roker's seafront works for a pre-wedding shoot on a calm day.
