North-east Hampshire

Country houses on the Surrey border

The corner of Hampshire nearest to us is the one with the most to offer an Asian wedding. Within reach of Farnborough and Aldershot are exclusive-use country houses on the Surrey border. One manor house estate says it specialises in Gujarati, Bengali, Punjabi and Muslim weddings and takes up to 250 guests, with rooms on site. Another country house offers dry-hire celebrations for up to 300 and says it is experienced in Hindu, Muslim and Sikh celebrations.

Dry hire and on-site accommodation suit multi-day Asian weddings: families can bring their own caterers and decorators, and relatives can stay on the estate between events. Ask each venue what its own rules are for fire, music and finishing times.

From Northwood, this part of Hampshire is about 26 to 29 miles away, which makes each event a straightforward day trip. Ask each venue to confirm its licence and capacity in writing before you commit.

Communities

Aldershot, Southampton and the county's communities

Hampshire's communities are varied. After a 2009 campaign allowed Gurkha veterans with more than four years' service to settle in the UK, Aldershot's Nepalese population grew, giving Rushmoor the largest Buddhist community in the United Kingdom. A Nepali wedding in Aldershot would be planned with the family around its own customs, which we would ask about in detail.

In the south, at the 2021 census, 10.6 per cent of Southampton's residents were Asian, with 5.6 per cent Muslim, 1.7 per cent Sikh and 1.3 per cent Hindu. Southampton is about 65 miles from Northwood, so for a multi-day wedding there an overnight stay is usually sensible at this distance and is set out in your written quote.

Basingstoke sits between the two, about 37 miles from the studio. One hotel in the town states that it works with suppliers for Asian wedding catering and takes weddings of up to 200 guests.

The days

Planning each event of the wedding

A Hampshire Asian wedding might run from a mehndi at home in Farnborough to a ceremony at a country house and a reception for 300. Because the north-east is close to Northwood, Kaushik can cover each event as a separate trip, which keeps costs down. If the reception is on the south coast, a night nearby is usually sensible and appears in the written quote. Travel from Northwood, and any overnight stays, are quoted up front and set out in writing, event by event.

Send us a running order for each day, from the priest, granthi or imam if possible, and a list of the relatives who must be photographed. For the stage at a large Hampshire reception, decide beforehand which relatives join which photograph, so the queue moves quickly.

For larger weddings, a second photographer is an optional extra, freeing one camera to stay with the couple while the other covers guests, entrances and family tables.

Ceremonies

Hindu, Sikh and Muslim ceremonies in Hampshire

Hindu and Gujarati weddings at a Hampshire country house usually set the mandap in a ballroom or marquee, with the pheras around the sacred fire. The haldi may be held in the estate's accommodation the morning before, which brings natural light and room for family. There is more on the rituals themselves on our Hindu weddings page.

For a Sikh wedding, the anand karaj takes place at a gurdwara. Heads are covered and shoes removed, and during the laavan the photographer stays at the side and never walks in front of the Guru Granth Sahib. The milni and the doli are often the most joyful frames. See our Sikh weddings guide.

Muslim weddings bring the nikah, at home or in a mosque, with a mehndi before and a walima after. Coverage is modest and respectful, quiet during prayers, and agreed with the family in advance. More on our Muslim weddings page.

Civil ceremony and portraits

Register offices and portrait spots for Asian couples

If the civil ceremony is separate, Hampshire offers Aldershot's Catalpa room for up to 16, Basingstoke's Goldings with rooms for 30 and 50, and Hampshire Register Office in Winchester with four rooms up to 42. Portsmouth's Milldam House takes 45. A small civil ceremony at Castle Hill or Goldings can sit on its own date in the week before the main celebration.

For portraits or a pre-wedding shoot, Aldershot's Municipal Gardens have a wisteria pergola and an avenue of lime trees, and the Wellington Statue stands on Round Hill near the Royal Garrison Church. In Basingstoke, Eastrop Park has the River Loddon and a boating lake; in Southampton, the Common covers 365 acres of woodland, parkland and ponds.

Planning

Planning around Hampshire

01

Use dry hire well

Dry-hire country houses let families bring their own caterers and decorators. Confirm what is allowed before you sign.

02

Stay on the estate

Venues with on-site rooms let relatives stay between events, which makes a multi-day wedding easier for everyone.

03

Close to Northwood

Farnborough and Aldershot are under 30 miles from the studio, so each event can be a separate day trip.

04

South coast plans

Southampton and Portsmouth are over 60 miles away, so an overnight stay is usually sensible and is costed in your written quote.

05

Gurdwara manners

Inside the darbar hall, cover your head, leave shoes at the door, and expect the camera at the edge of the room for the laavan.
