Southampton is a south-coast city with a diverse community. We travel throughout Hampshire for Hindu, Sikh, Muslim, Gujarati and Tamil weddings, and Eastleigh, Totton and Hedge End are all familiar to us. The garland exchange, when the couple meet with the jaimala, is a moment of pure joy we love to photograph.

We arrive knowing the difference between a Gujarati pithi and a Punjabi maiyan, so nobody has to stop and explain their own traditions to us on the day. When the baraat arrives with drums and dancing we are in the thick of it, moving with the crowd so the welcome looks and feels exactly as loud as it was. For the vidaai we hold back and let the emotion be what it is, photographing the goodbyes gently rather than crowding a moment that belongs to the family.

Southampton Central railway station is on the South Western Main Line from London Waterloo. For relaxed couple photographs, we like Southampton Common, a large expanse of open parkland and woodland north of the city centre, and The Bargate, a medieval gatehouse that was once the main entrance to the walled town gives the day a strong sense of Southampton.

From the mandap to the gurdwara and the nikah

At a Gujarati mandap we know the hastamelap and the four mangal pheras, and we photograph them in the order your priest keeps rather than a generic script. At the gurdwara, the couple's walk around the Guru Granth Sahib during each laav is captured with reverence. The garland exchange, when bride and groom raise the jaimala over one another, releases the first great cheer of the day, and we catch it as it breaks.

The dhol player sets the pulse of the baraat, and we work close to the drum and the dancers so the picture carries the sound within it. From the turmeric of the haldi to the music of the sangeet, the events set the tone for the wedding. The farewell, when the bride leaves her family, is the most tender moment of many Asian weddings.
