Photographing your wedding in Southampton

Legally, an English wedding is remarkably brief, and that catches couples out. In most licensed rooms the ceremony occupies fifteen minutes, and every photographic decision around it has to exist beforehand, because nothing gets a second take. Seating, the registrar's position and the direction light arrives from were all settled the day you chose the room. Choosing badly is expensive and choosing well costs nothing. Couples who view a room only on a quiet weekday afternoon are seeing conditions they will never marry under.

Choose by ceiling and window, then, not only by chair count. Low ceilings return light gently onto faces. High Victorian ones absorb it. Glazing directly behind a couple silhouettes them unless the problem was anticipated. Variation between registrars surprises couples. One recites a fixed script from a single spot and stays put; another moves about, brings in readers, and rearranges the room's geometry three times inside ten minutes. Which sort you have is unknowable until the morning, so both get planned: a viewpoint surviving a static ceremony and a viewpoint surviving a mobile one. At the rehearsal, ask whether a camera may run during the vows.

Churches reverse the difficulty. Long aisle, dim interior, and authority over the camera resting with somebody other than you. A licensed room is short, bright and under your control. In both cases the signing is the only element ever staged for a lens, and two minutes on it beats ten. Speeches at a top table are a lighting difficulty before they are a timing one. What follows obeys a timetable other people set, speeches onwards. Build the group list around that timetable, not against it, and warn whoever is running the receiving line.

Do you edit in black and white as well as colour?+

Both versions land together. Certain frames only hold up once colour leaves, usually where the room's lighting was chaotic and the expression alone carried the image. The colour original of everything comes too, so no decision gets made on your behalf.

Would an engagement shoot help us relax?+

Nearly always, yes. A short session beforehand burns off the novelty, so the camera stops registering by mid-morning instead of by the speeches. It also gives us a read on how you two are together.
