We give you only as much direction as you need to feel comfortable, then step back so the day stays your own. In Bournemouth that could mean a civil ceremony in the dressed ceremony rooms at the BCP Civic Centre, formerly Bournemouth Town Hall, a clifftop hotel wedding on East Overcliff Drive at Hotel Miramar or The Suncliff Hotel, or another licensed venue such as Marsham Court Hotel. One practical point: the BCP register office ceremony is for the couple and two witnesses only, with no photographer, whereas in the separate ceremony rooms a photographer is not counted in your guest number. For portraits afterwards, the Lower, Central and Upper Gardens run for about 3 km from Bournemouth Pier towards the Poole boundary, giving us shade and greenery close to the seafront. Engagement shoots, a second photographer for busier days and beautiful fine art albums are all part of what we offer, and we travel throughout Dorset and the rest of the UK for your wedding.

Sea light is bright and directionless at midday and superb an hour before sunset, which is why a wedding in Bournemouth should protect a short window late in the afternoon. This is a Dorset seaside resort with seven miles of sandy beach and listed seafront gardens, and the Lower Gardens, which begin at the pier, give shelter and planting when wind off the bay makes the beach unworkable. Bournemouth Pier, the Victorian pier extending into the bay, is the most recognisable frame in the town. Bournemouth station lies on the South West Main Line, with trains to London Waterloo and Weymouth, and guests can also stay in Boscombe, Southbourne or Westbourne.

Starting with the licensed room

Your ceremony room was chosen for its licence rather than its light, and that is not negotiable. A licensed room may be the one with no windows. It may be the smallest space in the building. It may face the wrong way by late afternoon. No appeal exists, and the ceremony cannot be moved out of it. What you can do is find out exactly what waits inside, months beforehand, and stop being surprised on the morning.

So we settle that early: how many chairs, how much aisle, where the registrar will stand, whether daylight reaches the room at all. Everything afterwards is then planned around whatever that room cannot give. Usually it means protecting a stretch of time outdoors later, while colour still remains in the sky over the bay, and keeping the group list short enough to survive it.

From register office to reception

Registrars are not interchangeable. Districts hold different positions about camera movement during the declarations, and some will direct the photographer to the rear wall and keep them there. Two neighbouring districts can hand you two different answers. Put the question at your appointment, well before the morning itself, then pass the answer along to us, because it settles whether the vows are photographed close in or from wherever the photographer is placed. It also settles whether a second body is worth carrying through the door.

Legally the day has a very short core. Twenty minutes inside a long one carry the whole weight, and everything surrounding them is yours to arrange. Group photographs are what couples underestimate: each named combination spends time taken from something else, so we want the list a fortnight ahead and then we argue you down from it. Speeches make one lighting problem and the first dance makes another, never the same one.

The Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum on East Cliff Promenade was built between 1897 and 1901 as East Cliff Hall, is Grade II* listed and opened to the public as a museum in 1922. ¹
The Suncliff Hotel on East Overcliff Drive has an Atlantis Suite for up to 90 guests for the ceremony and wedding breakfast, or up to 200 for sole-use weddings, plus a smaller Sunrise Room for ceremonies of up to 40. ²
Bournemouth station is on the South West Main Line, managed by South Western Railway, with trains to London Waterloo and Weymouth and CrossCountry services north via Reading and Birmingham; it opened on 20 July 1885 as Bournemouth East. ³

What happens if the day runs late and we need you to stay longer?+

We stay if we can, charged by the hour and agreed on the night rather than argued over afterwards. Where another commitment the following morning makes it impossible, you will have heard that before booking.

Can we spread the payments rather than pay everything at once?+

Yes. A deposit secures the date, and the balance can be split across the months leading up to the wedding, on dates that you choose. We put that schedule in writing so nobody is guessing during the final week.

Would an engagement shoot help us relax?+

For most couples it does, and the reason is mechanical. Sixty minutes of being photographed teaches you what we are going to ask for, so on the wedding day nobody is learning anything new.

How do we hold our Bournemouth date with you?+

A signed contract plus a deposit. Until both land, your Bournemouth date remains available to anybody else who asks, and we mention that only because summer Saturdays disappear early and we would sooner not disappoint you.

We would rather not have too many posed photos; is that alright?+

That suits us. We will want a short group list, plus the two of you alone somewhere for a while, and then we stay well back for the remainder. Everything else we take as it comes.
