In the prayer hall we leave the flash off whenever the light allows, so the stillness of the room and the true colours of your outfits are what the pictures show. From the mehndi night and the dholki to the baraat arriving at your Bournemouth venue, the khutbah, the signing of the nikah-nama and the walima, we would photograph each part in turn. We treat your videographer, planner, decorators and dhol players as colleagues, and a short chat with each before the baraat heads off most of the problems that would otherwise cost you photographs. A seaside nikah is not the obvious image, but Bournemouth's seven miles of sandy beach and its listed seafront gardens make it a genuine option. Bournemouth Pier and the Lower Gardens give the couple two very different portrait settings before the rukhsati. Further east, Boscombe and Southbourne share the same seafront.

Settling the room plan for a Bournemouth nikah
In Bournemouth, as anywhere, the decisions come in a fixed order. The layout of the room gets settled first; lighting waits until that is known. Does the room divide, where does the division fall, what is it built from, and which side may be photographed? Four answers, and between them they set the kit list and where the camera may stand. The rest follows behind.
A solid screen across a hotel function room does two things a curtain will not. It stops light crossing, so each half wants a supply of its own. It also throws its colour back into whoever stands nearest. Ask which one you are getting, and whether a door between halves stays shut throughout. Silence while the nikah is spoken
The contract is the quietest thing in the day and among the shortest. Two people speak at conversational volume, a signature follows, and nothing about it repeats. Where to stand gets settled while the imam is still walking in; from then on we are silent, working long, the shutter on its quietest setting, and our feet stay put until the room itself moves. Doing that well comes down almost entirely to having decided everything ten minutes earlier.
The walima reverses the job. Here we make the light ourselves, which inside a hotel means learning what the ceiling will return before committing anything to a bounce. A low pale ceiling gives light back. A dark or lofty one means every lamp stands on its own feet. A mehndi held days beforehand sits nearer the contract than the walima: low seating, hands, patience, hardly any room. Last comes the rukhsati, outdoors, at night, into headlights and entrance lamps, which is the one part worth walking twice in advance.
