Bournemouth splits a Sikh wedding into two jobs with a journey wedged between, and they want quoting, timing and thinking about separately. Inside the hall nothing belongs to you: not the light, not the places a lens may stand, not the tempo of the morning. The hotel that takes the evening gives every one of those back, including the darkness you build first before putting anything into it.
So the planning splits in two. For the morning we ask the committee, weeks ahead, where a lens may go and whether the platform is approached from one side only, then carry glass fast enough to work from that single spot. For the evening the questions are different ones, mostly about ceiling height and how long the turnaround takes. For that second half, the venue might be The Suncliff Hotel, Hotel Miramar or Marsham Court Hotel.

Kneeling at the sangat's eye level
The sangat sits on the floor, which drops the natural eye line of the room to knee height while the couple, on their raised platform, sit above it. Photograph standing and every frame looks down on people. Kneel and you spend three hours on a hard floor. We kneel. Guru Granth Sahib governs that room, and the floor before it stays closed to us, never becomes a vantage point, whatever picture we are giving up.
Four laavan means four circuits of one short path, and the palla is what joins them, so on at least two circuits we follow the cloth rather than the faces. Kirtan runs long and quiet, which is when the room's own expressions surface; long glass from the rear collects them without a shutter being noticed. Before any of that, the milni happens outdoors at the gurdwara, quickly, in whatever the weather off the bay is doing. Jago is handheld, dark and moving.
