We plan for that: a fixed position at floor level, low, elbows in, never higher than the sangat's heads. Flash stays off entirely. The hall lighting is a single unvarying source, which is the one mercy in all of this, because one white balance setting will cover the whole ceremony.
Around that ceremony sit events of the opposite character. The jago beforehand is pure movement in poor light, so it gets worked wide and close. Milni happens outdoors and fast, a queue of embraces nobody can stage again. Langar is quiet and long, and we photograph it at a remove, so nobody feels watched. Doli closes the day in the worst light it offers, a car park after dark, and it is simultaneously the moment we are least permitted to miss.
