Throughout the laavan we keep the Guru Granth Sahib at the centre of the compositions, because that is where the ceremony truly happens and the pictures should say so. We photograph the milni pairings formally for the families and candidly for the album, so both the tradition and the teasing are kept. The arrival at the gurdwara has its own quiet ceremony, and we photograph the shoes coming off, the heads being covered and the family gathering on the steps before going in.
Turmeric ends up on far more people than the bride, and we follow it around the room, because a maiyan is really a picture of a family enjoying itself rather than a ceremony. Bhangra circles form and dissolve all evening, and we work from inside them, low and close, because a photograph taken from the edge of a dance floor never carries the noise. Doli endings ask for restraint rather than technique. We hold back, use a long lens, and let the family close around the car without a photographer pressing into the middle of the goodbye.

The jago brings the neighbourhood to the door, and we follow the dancing and the lit pot through the evening so its noise and joy come across. Sisters are usually the ones holding the morning together, and we photograph them working, because in twenty years they will want proof of how much of the day they carried.
The ardas and the karah parshad close the ceremony, and we stay with them so the album holds the whole service, not just the walks. Afternoon light on the gurdwara steps is usually the kindest of the day, and we use it for family groups before moving indoors for the meal and the celebrations that follow.
