Along one side there is usually a sightline that shows the palla travelling from hand to hand without a row of shoulders across it. We find that line while the sangat is still settling and then we hold it. Every one of those limits comes from attending the Guru Granth Sahib.

The four laavan repeat, and a lazy photographer takes home four near-identical files. We change elevation between rounds and turn the lens onto the sangat for two of them, because the response in that hall is the part nobody else records. Outdoors the milni moves faster than families expect: relatives pair off, garland each other and are gone inside seconds, in hard morning sun with their backs to it. We meter that before any car arrives.
