An Anand Karaj in Farnborough, gurdwara to reception

Two buildings, two jobs. The first is not yours. You arrive at a gurdwara and you take what its windows, its carpet and its layout hand you, because nothing there will be shifted so that a photograph improves. Second comes a room your family has hired, where the furniture, the lamps and even the direction chairs face can all be argued about. Around Farnborough a Sikh day is those two jobs plus the handover in the middle.

The handover is where these days come apart. A convoy leaves in usable daylight and pulls up somewhere else after it has gone, and the light you had been exposing for is not there any more. So we treat the gap as a scheduled item: portraits fixed while there is still sun worth having, then every setting on every body reset before the evening opens. A park near the reception gives open green for that, and we would rather book it into the plan than hope a window appears.

The palla, the laavan and the kirtan

The darbar hall, not the photographer, decides which positions exist. You cover your head and leave your shoes with everyone else's, and that part is not a photographic decision at all. Along one side there is usually a sightline that shows the palla travelling from hand to hand without a row of shoulders across it. We find that line while the sangat is still settling and then we hold it. Every one of those limits comes from attending the Guru Granth Sahib.

The four laavan repeat, and a lazy photographer takes home four near-identical files. We change elevation between rounds and turn the lens onto the sangat for two of them, because the response in that hall is the part nobody else records. Outdoors the milni moves faster than families expect: relatives pair off, garland each other and are gone inside seconds, in hard morning sun with their backs to it. We meter that before any car arrives.

Will you stay to photograph the doli?+

Yes. It falls right at the close of a long day, precisely when a tired crew begins packing its bags, and it can yield the strongest sequence of all. We would stay out by the cars until the last of them has pulled away.

Are you able to work without flash near the Guru Granth Sahib?+

Yes, and in that hall it is what we would do anyway. Fast prime lenses, a body that holds up at high sensitivity, and a position distant enough that no one at the front hears a shutter.

Can we pay for our wedding photography in stages?+

Yes. Booking a date needs a deposit, and the remainder divides into agreed instalments falling before the day, so no single large payment lands in the month when everything else does.

Do we get high-resolution files and the right to print them?+

You receive full-size files carrying no watermark, and the licence covers printing them wherever and whenever you want. Our copy sits on two drives in different places, and you would be wise to keep one yourself.

Sikh weddings start early. Are you happy with a dawn start?+

Happy is not the word for a four o'clock alarm, but yes, and the whole schedule is planned to suit it. We are there before the household is properly awake, which makes the earliest frames calm instead of a scramble.
