Every family seats its ceremonial authority somewhere else, and locating it takes up much of the job. Sometimes a priest decides when the next thing begins and the room waits on him. Sometimes an aunt does, and everybody knows it except the printed running order. We ask at the planning meeting who will actually call it, then watch that person all day instead of the paperwork, which is generally wrong by mid-afternoon anyway.
The rites themselves we take one family at a time. A muhurtham pinned to an exact minute poses one kind of problem. A baraat that arrives when it arrives poses the opposite kind, and it is harder, because nobody can be early for something with no time against it. Portraits are the piece most often lost, so we lift them out of the gaps and give them a named slot, somewhere with planting or a long straight run to work along.
